Given that it’s “unwise” to weld to the front cross member because it is likely to contain petrol vapour, how would you suggest installing a towing eye on the front of a plus 2?

A few options
Bolt a strap, cable or rod onto one or both of the chassis to body bolts in front of the radiator and run it through the grill
Make up a clamp around the cross member and run it under the nose
Make up a rod / strap / cable that picks up one of the lower wishbone pivot bolts

Thanks Rohan.
The body to chassis bolts sounds the easiest. Are these the ones on the brackets holding the rack, ahead of the rack? Is this strong enough?

mine is welded to the bottom of the vacuum chamber -----just a ‘u’ bracket ----ed
Was it welded on before the chassis was used? Otherwise, what precautions did you take? best regards, iain

I have a rigid frame bolted to the 2 bolts you describe. The frame supports a tow point that sticks through the grill. The car has been retrieved from the track quite a few times over the years using this tow point with no sign of distortion despite fairly crude handling by tow crews in a hurry to clear the track for the next race.

The hook looks ideal. Was it always on the chassis, or did you have it welded on? I am afraid of welding anywhere near the vacuum resevoir.

Ian,
Hooks like twincamman’s are fitted to the chassis during fabrication - if it was made by Spyder.

naaa ----just find someone who can weld upside down -----or when the bodys off --its just a lotus chassis --vacuums don’t explode -----but I would wrap the hook around the rear of the chassis member and added gussets if I had done it --but it would have weighed a pound or more ------- --ed
Any chance of a piccy of the frame that’s bolted to the chassis? I have a galvanised chassis so prefer a bolt on solution.
Sean.
sure —but it is just a lotus chassis ----modified a bit—the hook is just welded to the bottom of the frame -----ed
Take a look at Johan’s elegant solutions-

“Vacuums don’t explode”- please discuss…

they implode —ed
Iain,
I have on “Old English White” this kind of bolt on solution …(see forum gallery)
Fixed with the two bolts of the steering rack and the chassis-to-body one … it nead a long piece to reach a visible point ( 45cm ) and allow rope & bars to work in good conditions.
You will need a small license plate or find another location …
I will post detailed pictures this evening if interested …
Christian.
