When shimming the steering rack on an Elan does the 2.19" (55.6 mm) dimension apply to the distance from the centreline of the front lower wishbone stud to the base of the rack OR to the centreline of the rack?

Brian Buckland quotes a dimension of 158 mm from the top surface of the upper pivot pins to the rack mounting surface. Its reasonably easy to measure with a long straight edge across the pins and a vernier height gauge.
Reasonably easy if the body and the top front arms are off. Otherwise you need to come up from the bottom studs. I will defer to others on your original question - my guess is that the measurement is to the top of the shim stack, not the base or centerline of the rack, but I am not sure.

Here is how I went about it
Neils, tough to tell from photo if you are referencing the center line of the lower wishbone stud or not.
Could you clarify?
Is it 55.6 mm ?
Bill
Looks like it is from the centre of the pin to the shim face.
Not sure what the measurement should be though?
