Starter motor bellhousing cover plate

Does anyone know where these may be available or has a spare. I understand the dust cover has to be modified to fit to prevent fouling on chassis, any tips on installing cover to engine already fitted in car
Thanks
Tony

Stage 1 Motorsport. They list the lower plate (and the sandwich plate) on Ebay. Look for “2000E plate”.

edit: sorry, I misunderstood, you want the round starter pinion cover.

Hi Tony,
You may not like this but I also could not find the correct cover. I used the bottom half of a plastic bottle. it fitted perfectly and easily and did the job. Once painted black you would not know even from underneath.
Later when I changed to a modern starter motor it was no longer needed and I inserted the top from a metal canister there to fill the hole. I also discovered that there are two sizes of the original Ford pinion cover, we need the larger one.
Best of luck

Colin would be pleased with your " added lightness"…

John

Hi John, good to hear from you. We used to meet at Tatton Park, but it is not what it used to be and I have stopped going there. I trust you are keeping busy.
Mike`s suggestion above looks like a good job, but fifty quid for an out of sight dust cover is out of my comfort zone. Might be OK if it was the original Ford one.
That would go a long way towards a modern starter motor which would only need a blanking plate.
Cheers

Thanks all
Eric do you know what the two sizes of the original cover were, better still if you know what size the Elan was originally or the particular Ford model the Elan came off. Thanks also John for the Kelvedon suggestion, but like Eric it seems a bit expensive for a hidden component. Then again I supose the cost of machining is going to raise the price, but then there will also be a fair bit of waste during that process that you don’t gain any benefit from.

Sorry Tony, I do not know those dimensions. I was given a perfect looking cover by a collector of old Ford cars, however when offered up it was too small. Therefore there are two sizes, but which engines they are for I do not know.
If you are prepared to bodge it up as I did then collect a selection of plastic bottles and metal containers and have a go. Basically it has to Keep the pinion clean and second it has to look as good as you can manage.
The one I used with the modern starter was the cover from a tin of brass shim. It fitted in the hole perfectly and looks so good that I would not replace it, even with the correct one.
Good luck

Hello Eric
At least I now know that there are two sizes ans so it will save a lot of chasing around. I will measure the hole in the bellhousing as best I can and keep a lookout. In the meantime I will start the bottle collection!!

Thanks again for your help
Best
Tony

According to my Cortina MkII parts book the Ford number is 109E6677 (all Cortinas, incl. Lotus). The Wiki parts list on here says 105E6677 and 109E6677. The Lotus parts manual says 105E6677.
There is also a 100E6677 listed by suppliers of Anglia etc. spares (e.g. Small Ford Spares) and that one has some dimensions listed - 47.5mm o/d and 45.5 overall height. Confusingly this one is listed as fitting the 105E Anglia. At least those dimensions might help you identify which one it isn’t.
I’ve also read somewhere, probably on here, that the shape was achieved with the use of a specially shaped dolly, and a few good hits with a lump hammer.

Hello Mike
That is all useful information especially the dimensions. Interesting that they all appear to have the same last four digits with only the model code changing. But given that, it puts a question over Eric’s reply about two different sizes, unless they kept the last four digits as the part number and the model code determined the size of the hole.

Your final paragraph probably gives the clue for fitting to an Elan giving enough clearance as alluded to by others, so I think the way forward is to make a wooden dolly to shape the cup.

In your manuals does it give this part a particular name which may help trawling for the part?
Thanks
Tony

Well here is what I measure for the two types of caps.
Brian.

Hi Tony,

In the Cortina 2 parts book it is described as “Cover (starter motor drive)”. For some reason Ford decided to list and draw it in the engine block section of the manual, rather than the more appropriate clutch housing section.

Mike

Hello Brian
That is just what I need, do you know the height of each Please
Thanks
Tony

Yes, the height is approx 57-58mm overall on both the caps including the small lip which goes into the bell-housing, the lip itself is approx 8-9mm.
Brian.

Brian
Thanks so much, those dimensions give me all the details needed, all I need to do now is measure the hole and then try and find a cap. Your help has been invaluable, not just to me but also all those that will be looking for this same information.
Regards
Tony
