This is actually a question regarding a 1968 Lotus Europa S2, but since there’s a lot of know-how accumulated here, I thought it would be a good idea to post the question here.
I have a Smiths BP2207/99 electric oil pressure gauge, which is supposed to be coupled with an electric sender unit at the Renault engine. The trouble is that I don’t have that sender and it’s not available anywhere either. Holden have sender units (holden.co.uk/displayproduct.asp? … de=070.185) for 0-100 psi, which is the same as the gauge’s span and are supposed to be compatible with Smith’s instruments. This sounds great, but can I be sure that this sender and the gauge has the same voltage span for the given pressure span?
Yes, I have asked Holden, but they don’t seem to know for sure that it will work.
Unfortunately, mine and possibly most/all twin-cam engines have an actual real pressure gauge with a copper pressure pipe from the engine to the gauge; no electrics, so there may not be anyone here who can help you.
I fitted an electrical sender on my Lotus 7. I got info on it and bought a suitable sender from Speedy Cables. Contact I had was Andy Barraclough 01639 732213 back in October 2006
If you give them the number of the gauge they should be able to sort a sender out 4 U
I have a couple in the garage…
I bought one that claimed to be for the twink for my +2 but the thread turned out to be too small…
I then bought one from paul matty that was the correct thread but as youve found was for 100psi and therefore the gauge always showed under the actual pressure…
the one I ended up with was form a rover SD1 I think…the local classic car garage near me found it…I gave him the specs and he sourced the part …
do you have the original?..
could you do some measuring …
thread etc
Jaguars in the 1960’s had a 60psi electrical sender, they are available from the usual Mk2 and E type specialists, they are Smiths units and will work with the Smiths gauges in Lotus cars, but the thread will be different and you will need an adapter.
