slave cylinder

Hi

Can anyone tell me where to get a genuine slave cylinder for the Elan. I am a bit unsure of the quality of ones sold by the usual outlets and eBay. I think it’s Girling but not sure.

I lost fluid the other night. luckily I had some fluid in the boot and the car got me home.I have already changed the seals but its still leaking. The pipes and fittings to it are all sound but the bore of the cylinder is a bit tatty so a new one is sought

Comments if possible please

Thanks

Escort Twin Cam / Mexico has the same cylinder. You’ll probably have more hits searching under Escort Twin Cam/ RS1600/ Mexico than under Lotus Elan. Refer link below:

Thanks for that 2 cams I will check it out

I recently had an old Lockheed brake master cylinder rebuilt by Past Parts in Bury St Edmunds.

The bore was honed and a stainless steel liner inserted plus all new seals and the body refinished. Slightly more expensive than a new off the shelf “pattern part” from the Far East but will probably last for another 50 years.

Maybe worth giving them a call

Over the years whenever I need to rebuild a master or slave cylinder I get a stainless steel liner fitted rather than buy new

I bought this part in 2019, and can confirm it fits the Elan, having the correct 0.875" bore. In fact, it was identical to the cylinder I removed, with Girling lettering and part number.

How much did they charge for that service?

SJ has them for about 40 pounds.

Personally I’m not really a fan of stainless steel liners in cylinders unless you really have to. Inserting a liner decreases the wall thickness and strength of the cylinder it’s inserted into. For a master cylinder you may get away with it but the clutch slave cylinder even without a sleeve inserted is quite thin in the wall particularly at the circlip groove.

£80 (plus VAT) for the master cylinder and £75 each for rebuilt / replated brake callipers. Turnaround time 3 weeks, but quicker if the situation requires.

Thanks for coming back.
