ie. the one from a Mk III Zephyr. I’m pleased to have picked one up at last but am now faced with the task of fitting it through the headlining that I had replaced at Fibreglass Services. The mounting features a central hole with a diameter of a little under 200 thou which I take to be 3/16’" clearance and two spaced either side of it about 150 thou which I’m guessing to be 1/8" clearance. All three holes are csk. I have three queries 1/ Will there be three bosses under roof lining threaded to accept the mounting screws eg. UNC of the sizes I’ve mentioned 2/ Exactly what screws do I need? ie. size, thread, length, slotted or cross head? 3/ Can anyone describe having performed this task? Armed with a bit of knowledge I can probe the area with and without a spike to try to find the holes but I’d like to avoid pinning the tail on the donkey if at all possible… By the way, as an antidote for the many things that I’ve paid way too much for on Fleabay, this item came in at a princely ?8.20 including the postage. Maybe my luck’s changing. I’ve attached pictures. Many thanks, Russell
Hi Russell;
On my S4 FHC, there was wooden mounting block on the roof.
After irstalling the new headliner, I felt for the block and made a small incision to mark the holes on the block.
I used chrome wood or sheet metal screws.
I opted for a smaller mirror from Dave Bean as the OE covered up a lot of the windshield. No complaints.
I have the same mounting plate as you pictured.
In fact I have the mount and mirror if any FHC owner is interested.
Hi Russell,
There should be a wooden block fitted to the front edge of the roof nearest to the windscreen rubber in the centre.
If there isn’t I cannot see you fitting this mirror without removing some headlining.

Tips on the screws anyone? I’m guessing now slotted wood screws
Yes mine have short slotted wood screws, and they’re not even chromed ![]()
Measure them correctly otherwise you’ll have a spiked roof

Hi Rusell. If you are interested in originality, the Elan Couple mirror and stem was chromed. I bought a new old stock Zephyr mirror identical to yours and was a little miffed to find it grey painted! But if the plastic surround around tjhe mirror is still soft, it’s easy enough to pull apart and get chromed.

That’s one of the things I’m worried about Gino. By the way your car appears to pass more than a passing resemblance to mine. You have great taste
Mark that’s a valuable tip thank you. I’m warming it up right now
Yes they’re quite similar but mine is a pre-airflow. ![]()
Have you had some work done on your arches ? The rear ones look a lot like the S4.

S4 arches and tail lights. S3 everything else. I dropped off the mirror at the chromers this morning so I hope I can locate that wooden mounting block.
Which Chromer are you using?
Please post results here.
The work is being done by London Chroming In Old Kent Road. I’ll post snaps of the transformation In a couple of weeks
Now chromed and I’m pleased to recommend London Chroming. There’s a short documentary to be found at vimeo.com/16947597
