Photo of original S4 carpet

I want to replace the carpet in my S4 FHC, which was poorly cut when installed by a previous owner. I’ve been digging through the various threads on this topic and am aware of the difficulty finding a match for the original, but I’ve yet to find a good photo of the original that shows the correct pattern and sheen. All the photos seem to be of replacement options that are either considered close or a big miss. As a result, I’m not 100% clear on what I’m looking for. Does anyone have that?

The carpet material was also used on the door cards, so if you have the original material on there, there is your match.

Hope this helps

Thanks Richard, but that won’t work for me. The PO had the door cards redone in leather and the upholstery shop used a cut pile for the carpet section.

Thanks,
John

I can take some pics of original Sprint carpet next week if you haven’t received any in the meantime.
Door carpet and over transmission tunnel are original in mine

while waiting for someone to come up with a good photo, here is what I found from before I overhauled a '68 s4se (to the right original carpet saved for pattern, door card to be redied in black to save the original part, even if the car was repainted in royal blue from an original burned sand)

I posted a photo of the original, but faded, carpet. Link below.

Thank everyone, this has been helpful. Snowy’s picture in the other thread gives me a great idea of what the weave should look like. RichardS, is your carpet still reasonably black or is it quite faded? If it’s in decent condition, I’d love to see a photo at some point that reflects the level of sheen in the original fibers.

Thanks,
John

It’s still black, I’ll take some photos next week for you.

If you find a supplier, I’d be interested to know. The carpet question came up recently and there was no definitive answer as to where to get a matching type.

Will do. I’m not hopeful based on what I’ve read in other threads, but I might get lucky.

That’s the same colour that the original carpet in my '69 S4FHC has gone, more brown than black.

Has anyone looked at the German Square Weave used in old Porsches and Mercedes? In some colors, it looks similar to the pictures of the Elan loop, in others, not as much. I’ve ordered a sample of the true black (as opposed to black which includes some gray). I’ll post a photo when it arrives.

John,

I have just looked at the photo from snowyelan. Although my carpet was in a terrible state and partly missing I do think snowy is showing the correct carpet.

Hope this helps,

Richard Hawkins

Thanks for checking Richard.

Here are some pics of original carpet, 1973 Sprint. Difficult to get a definitive photo but hopefully of help

Thanks Richard. In the picture, it looks more like a cut pile than a loop. Is that just how it appears in the picture? For comparison, here is the photo of the original and replacement carpeting that snowy posted in the other thread:

I think it’s just the way it’s photographed. Top left is from carpet footwell, others are carpet door trim.
As far as I know they are original.
I’ve replaced some other pieces with carpet from Sue Miller some years ago, but kept what I could of the original.
