I thought I’d share this latest little quirk. I was in the car last week, (DHC Sprint) with the roof down, and halfway in my journey, after a downhill winding stretch, I started to experience a whining noise between 40 to 50 mph. I was approaching a built up area so couldn’t try and recreate the conditions. It was either a whining / whistling type of noise. My initial thoughts were a gap in the door seals, but moving my hand along the door gap didn’t make any difference. And why Luke it suddenly start halfway through the journey ? I then wondered… brake pad still touching a disc ? Diff ? Wheel bearing ? Usual thoughts when an Elan owner !
No sign of the issue on the return journey, all temps and pressures were ok. No sign of any fluid leaks.
Was out in the car today, including some motorway driving to deliberately try and see if it recurred. And it did, at about 60mph.
Then a brainwave…. Looked at the drivers side face air vent, which appeared fully closed, moved it a fraction and the noise disappeared.
So the moral of the story is - the next time you get a weird noise, check the simple things ![]()
