Hi Guys

I am sorry to say that the time has come.

I will be 87 years old this month and I am finding the maintenance and care of my Elan gradually becoming more difficult. If I can no longer keep it to the standard it deserves then I have to sell it and let someone else take over.

i bought it as an unfinished total rebuild on a Lotus galvanised chassis. The work done by the previous owner was comprehensive and excellent, but he became ill and could not continue.

The paint he chose is Lotus Elise Laser Blue. Gradually over the years I have worked on the car until I am satisfied with each part I have done.

It is a good looking and reliable car and a delight to drive.

Some of the jobs I

have done are:-

Seats re-upholstered, Pre engaged starter fitted, electronic ignition module in distributor,

Fuel gauge, odometer, speedometer and temp. gauge repaired,

Hand brake cable and rods replaced to improve efficiency. It will now hold on a 1 in 6 gradient with no trouble. Battery isolation switch within reach of driver, CV drive shafts, electric radiator fan with switch under dash, priming pump in boot with switch under dash.

All lamps LED except headlamps and ignition.

Two Sue Miller Lotus type stronger wheels, original style Pirreli Cinturato tyres.

Philips Turnolock radio with FM band, it works but I never fitted a proper aerial as I am scared of drilling a hole in that lovely body. Recent front and rear callipers.

Engine rebuilt 2021, Diff rebuilt a few years ago.

I have records of the work done and records and photos from the previous owner. DVLA sent me full records of previous owners from new. It was off the road from the mid eighties until I taxed it in 2011

If this sounds like the sort of car you are looking for ring me for a chat or to arrange a viewing. No pressure from me as I like showing it off anyway. I do not like putting contact details on a forum so if you respond to this, I will send you contact details and address by private message.

Eric, so sorry to learn that you have reached what must have been a very difficult decision for you.

May I also take the opportunity of not only wishing you all the best for the future, but of also thanking you for the insightful and helpful suggestions you have come up with over the years you have contributed to the forum. I do hope that you will continue to look in on us here and carry on making even more valuable contributions to our knowledge.

May I also personally thank you for taking on the manufacture of the late Alex Black’s window bolts, which have made re-attaching bobbins, steel wire and windows so much easier. It was also kind and generous of you to continue to allow the sales proceeds of the same to support the charity that Alex also supported.

Good luck with the sale of your wonderful Elan. I am sure that whoever becomes its next custodian will be able to enjoy the fruits of your labours for many years and miles of reliable and fun motoring.

Seems a very fair price for a well-sorted Elan. Love the color!

Hi Tim,

Thankyou for your comments, that is a better ad than mine!

I did reply to your PM but I cannot tell if you received it.

I will continue to make the window cable clamp screws but the demand is gradually reducing.

Sue Miller has sold about 320 now so we may be reaching saturation. That suggests that over 80, S3 and S4 cars have been modified now with my version of Alex`s invention. She sends them worldwide and takes nothing for it herself.

Readers, remember, for parts or advice always ask Sue Miller first.

I have now sent £3250 to Cancer research UK and have £100.00 waiting to go.

After Gift aid is added to that they will receive £4187.00. All that from a little screw and a good idea.

Not much interest in my car yet, so, soon I will advertise it elsware.

Cheers

Hello Eric

I think we all owe you a debt of gratitude for both your contributions and the supply of window bolts over the years. You have been a great help to me and I hope you will continue to advise others as before.

I understand fully the reasons for selling your car and the reluctance at having to do so. I too am in a similar situation having been diagnosed with terminal cancer. I have also been reluctant to put my car and all the accumulated Lotus parts I have gathered over the years, but have to say in reading your story above tells me that I too have to let go.

Your Elan is a credit to your hard work but unfortunately I am not in a position to take you up on its sale but am sure some lucky person will not regret the purchase from you. Hope all goes well with a sale.

By the way I am trying to advise a local owner down here in the west country with a restoration, so would you remind me of the benefits and cost of the bolts so I can pass the details on please.

Kind regards

Tony

Hi Tony,

I think I am aware of your situation from an earlier post. It`s a bugger but I hope you stay well for some time yet.

In my case the time has come for a different reason but I think that at my advanced age it is better to move the car on now while I am able to attend to it. (hint, hint,) The main reason though is that I am finding it more difficult to work on it.

I am not short of pastimes as I am a member of two walking clubs and we regularly walk in this beautiful Lancashire and West Yorkshire countryside. Also I have been restoring antique clocks for over fifty years and we have a large garden to attend to.

The screws that I make are for clamping the window lift cable at the two holes in the bottom of the window. Lotus and Sue Miller call them clampstuds although to me they are not a stud. Because the screw has an internal grub screw to clamp the cable it is not necessary to tighten the Nyloc nut onto the glass thereby removing the risk of breaking the glass. They are only available from Sue Miller( or myself at a club meeting.) for £13.50 each. Sue also has larger diameter pulleys which reduce the stress on the cable.

Thankyou for your nice comments and contact me at any time you wish.

Best regards

Eric

Hi Eric I am interested in your Elan. Although I have recently relocated to Essex, originally we are from Lancashire, and then 25 years in South Yorkshire.

I have today just looked at one Elan at a dealers, but it needed too much work, and yours looks to be such a well looked after car.

I look forward to hearing from you. I tried to post my email address here, but it seems to be verboden.

Hi Stephen I have tried to send you a PM (private message) but have failed, so try to contact me by email. [email protected]. lets see if that works.

Regards

Eric

Thanks Eric - I’ve just emailed you.

Hello Eric

At least it sounds as though you are keeping busy with all your different activities and long may they continue. Your right of course that when they give you the bad news you start to realise all the things you still want to do, which may no longer be an option (working on the car being one of them). However there is no point in being down about, just think of all the things you have achieved, and of those small children that have or may never have such opportunities. So for you and I we are the lucky ones.

I will pass on your information about the window screws to my pal with the details you provided, but as we are at the far end of the country it is unlikely we can meet to collect in purson, so will get him to contact Sue direct.

In the meantime I hope that your car goes to a caring owner and won’t be too much of a wrench for you.

Regards

Tony

My car is now sold.

Thankyou all for your comments and kind words. The buyer is just the right person to have it.

I feel it will be in good hands but unfortunately he lives a heck of a long way from us, so I will not see it again.

I will still be around and will lurk here for a while. I have received a tremendous amount of help from members of this forum and I am grateful to you all and of course thanks to Jeff who runs this forum without which the experience of owning an Elan would be much more difficult.
