My S3 has a deteriorated strip of foam rubber running across the ledge under the rear edge of the bonnet. It appears to have been 3/4” high or less, I’m not convinced it would reach the underside of the bonnet, but regardless, does anyone know its purpose and correct dimensions?
Thanks, Alan
I used, seems correct
Frost King R930H Sponge Rubber Foam Tape 9/16-Inch, Black
$8 at hardware store
And that is compressed when you close the bonnet?
It has some compression as I can see/watch it expand after popping the bonnet
At $8, your not out too much I hope
OK, so my only question is, why? What does blocking airflow through that 1/2” slot accomplish?
The air intake for the heater is immediately aft of the foam strip, so I had always assumed it was to stop the usual cocktail of engine smells being drawn in to the heater and then into the cabin.
It could of course just be to stop the bonnet rattling.
Thank you, Andy. That makes perfect sense; I had completely disregarded the presence of the cabin air intak right downstream.
Hi,
any photo of where this is located? I don’t have this on my car.
See the engine bay photo here:

and on the right you will see a strip of grey foam running almost the entire width of the engine bay.
Looks familar
