This vertical area is not where the unique lotus elan twincam ID number would be stamped (the photo rather displaying a grounded off cast number): the stamped engine ID is located on a machined horizontal flat on the intake side above the engine mount (the one with a cast L if applicable)
Yes thanks, I can see a couple of numbers now but most are unreadable.

you may want to try under grazing light or enhancing the stamping with stain/ink, or to make a paper imprint by rubbing wood… knowing the sizeand font of the letters/numbers may help, too… good luck!
