ELan S4 Sprint Strobe Ignition Timing Setting

Hi all,
I have read many posts here on the subject of dynamic ignition timing, but cant seem to find a final answer to what the timing should be set to. Given the myriad of updates and mods that have been applied to Elans over the years, it seems that the general view is ‘there is no definitive answer’.

However, my Sprint is totally stock with a 23D distributor and Dellorto DHLA 40s. No mods, just as Mr. Chapman designed it!

I currently have it set to 12 degrees BTDC static. But was hoping to do a strobe setup if I can find an accurate setting/RPM value for this setup.

BTW, it starts with this setting just perfect, first flick of the key. SO I guess it cant be far off. :slight_smile:

Any thoughts pls?
Thank you
Mark

12 degrees static is normally about right. Measure the total advance with your timing light from 1000 to 6000 rpm and post the results. I can then comment on the curve versus what may be desirable.

Its easier doing it this way than trying to explain all the issues with the published curves in the manual :}

However a few brief comments

  1. A Weber Elan likes somewhere between 28 and 32 engine degrees total advance fully in by around 3500 To 4000 RPM which depends somewhat on the fuel used and the spec i.e. standard, SE, Sprint
  2. Stromberg Elans like a bit more and coming fully in around 6000 RPM
  3. Tuned engines with higher lift / longer duration cams generally like more than standard cars.
  4. Dizzy springs tend to stretch overtime so advance can come in quicker on an old dizzy
  5. Maximum dynamic advance is limited by the stop inside the distributor which usually has a cam degree number stamped on it

cheers
Rohan
