Elan s4 Sprint Speedo not Working

Hello all
The speedo on my Sprint is not working. I have removed the cable from the back and with a hand under the dash as I drive along I can feel the cable spinning happily, so I am assuming it must be the speedo itself.???

Do you have any thoughts on any other possible cause? Is there any other vehicle electrical involvement to make it work?

If the consensus is the speedo is dead, does anybody have any suggestions for a good repair service pls? I am in the UK, Worcestershire.

Just to confirm which speedo I have, here is a pic of the unit.

Thanks for any help

Cheers
Mark

Marko,

Its not unknown for the cable or right angle drive at the gearbox to fail, but give the impression of still working. The cable can break, but the ends rub together enough to fool you that all is ok, same is true of the little square quill on the right angle drive. When you put the cable in the speedo, it doesn’t have enough torque to turn the speedo innards and you think the speedo has had it.

The speedo input bearing can gum up, which puts a load on the cable and gear, and that can cause problems to develop.

If you get the speedo out, you can turn the input square where the cable fits with a suitably sized flat bladed screwdriver. It should be free to turn, and if you keep at it, the 1/10ths on the milo should move. If you give the screwdriver a quick spin, the needle should move. If this doesn’t happen your speedo is probably a dud. The guys to go to are:

Speedycables instrument repair

Don’t let the name fool you, Speedycables and their sister company Caerbont Automotive Instruments are what is left of Smiths Instruments. They have the tooling, documentation and I believe some of the employees left from Smiths.

Check the quill in the angle drive that inserts into the drive gear. You can spin it with nothing attached, and it seems to be fine. Apply some torque to both the input and output and see it it has no slippage. Have had 2 of these fail. East to have repaired by most any speedo shop.
