Oh what joy. Removing the plugs today the No 2 spark plug insert came out in bits. Top is attached to SP, bottom part is still in the cylinder head and remainder is in fragments, retrived from the plug hole and piston crown.
So CH needs to come off to have this fixed; valve guides are at the end of their life and need replacing, so winter jobs already!
I’m in N Wales, but quite happy to travel uk wide for a knowledgeable engineering works which is TC experienced in this sort of work.
The work by Smurthwaites on my engine I have found to be first class and I have no complaints at all. The engine is running really well.
The only issues were how long it took as it ran over the time ”I thought” it would, and communication. When calling and asking to speak with John, typically when I was chasing delivery, I usually got his daughter as he was “track side”, “dyno testing” or something else. However all my questions were eventually answered and I got my engine back. Well built and dyno tested engine.
A testament to his work is the photos he sent during the build, I have attached one our two more. He wanted paying in stages, fair enough by me s he has bills to pay and parts and Labour are not cheap.
I had new valves, valve seats and guides, assembled and tappet clearances done by Steve Curson at Vulcan Engineering near Brands Hatch a couple of years ago. Steve has years of experience with these engines. Very reasonably priced as well.
Any current recommendations for the U.S.? Does anyone know if Chris(?) from Cycle Racing Development is still active? He did a head for me 20+ years ago, and it’s still running strong, but now it’s time to do another for another car, and I can’t seem to find him online.
I had heard that John Smirthwaite is no longer doing twincam work, only Climax work. His business premises have also been up for sale. Anyone used him recently?
I am in Vermont, and I had block and rod work done at Green Mountain Gear Works in Williston, VT. Excellent work, rapid turnaround and fair pricing. They are a full service shop.
I’ve used CTM Engineering based in Essex for all of my engine refurbishment works and they have been excellent in all aspects. appreciate they are some distance from you though.
Personally I think you should qualify your comment Steve. If you have had a poor experience with someone, tell us about it, so people are fully informed . Just stating what you have can lead to the usual internet gossip / nonsense.
