Can anyone source an S4 pass.side door lock mechanism?

Hi everyone

I am at the end of my tether trying to make my existing locking mechanism work properly, and have come to the conclusion that it might be knackered! The key locks are new and are working, and I have the correct rods and associated clips

Has anybody got one for sale or can tell me where I might get one?

Many thanks

Jim

Hi

Not available new 2-3 years ago when I last tried from Susan Miller, etc. SJ Sportcars might be worth trying. If you do find a source let me know. Hopefully you should be able to find one secondhand, can’t remember offhand what they were from, or unique to the Elan?

Just noticed your location, are you going to the next Club Lotus SW meeting? If so venue has changed for December, are you on the circulation e-mails? I hope to be there so can discuss further.

Hi Jim

I believe the S4 handles are Jag XJ6.

I just completed servicing my S4 door locks. Make sure you have the correct rods connected for the door lock and push button. I found one of my door handles was missing the torsional spring in the push button. I removed the latch mechanism from the door and gave it good cleaning and lubed with dry graphite. The door locks work fine now.

Jim,

I dont think anyone is entirely clear as to which part you are looking for. I certainly am not. I think you are talking about the white nylon and metal part, about 4 x 3" square, that is fixed to the door skin shut face with 4 countersunk head set screws, is that correct?

And if it is, I believe these are unobtainable.

Leslie

Hi Leslie

You are absolutely correct in your assumption, and yes I understand that they are unobtainable. That said, I’ve still got to solve my problem somehow. Thanks for your comment.

Jim

They are Austin/Morris 1100 parts, Jaguar were also part of the Leyland group.
I kept a lot of parts from my old austin 1100 when I finished with it as a field banger…

Cant make this out properly, doesn’t look quite right, but:

also not quite right:

The 1100 ones on ebay don’t look right. :imp: maybe from a different year?

Mini?..looks hot favourite!

Wasn’t the Elan rubber door surround also from an Austin 1100?

Jim

You have PM.

John

These?

which is which side?

John

The one on the right is for a left hand door and vice versa. You have some gold dust there JC, just want taking apart and replating.

Leslie

Wasn’t that kind of lock fairly common in the 70s? I seem to remember Marinas and Maxis having that kind of thing. Or were they all different? Or were they all the same but rare nonetheless?

Paddy

Try a company called Weston Body Hardware, I got most of my Elan door bits from them

I suspect most dealers use them as well

I found a new pair of Triumph Dolomite latches on Ebay that fit but needed a bit of fiddling as the lever arms are not quite the same. I haven’t got round to attaching the locks but can at least open and close the doors!

These look as though they may be right … westonbodyhardware.com/images/pdf_d/d20.pdf

Incidentally I found some of the clips very awkward to fit - I found a single electric terminal block did the job and stayed in place [the white plastic connector blocks for mains wire with 2 small screws - I cut a single one off the end of a block]

Hi everyone

I have just come in from the garage and I am relieved to say that I have fixed my locking mechanism. I managed to tidy up some wear and tear play in the mechanism by some judicious filing of the adjacent part. I also had to alter the shape of the actuating rod in the vice to allow the mechanisms on either end of it to sit comfortably.

Thank you all so much for your help and information which I am sure will be useful to other members. Our current locking mechanisms won’t last forever (even though Roy in Paul Matty’s parts department reminded me that they were very resilient components), so I hope I haven’t wasted everybody’s time. I replaced some of the little alloy clips with plastic inserts (for the rod linkages) from PM’s and found them easy to fit.Although I found that you had to reverse fit them for the lock mechanism end of the external door handle.

The job seemed the same as all Lotus Elan jobs-awkward, fiddly but do-able.

Thanks again for all your help.

Jim

I must also say thanks on your behalf as I need a pair of them myself, I now have somewhere to look at least!

Cheers,
Mark.

Hello ther,

I still have new ones in my store as I bought 20 years ago old Lotus stocks of parts from some large European dealers.

Kind regards, Arno
