Aluminium plate behind the cylinder head

Hello,
My S3 1967 has an aluminium plate behind the cylinder head. It is mounted to the bell housing?s two upper bolts. Anyone who has seen this before and also knows what it is for? I have enclosed two photos but it is tricky to take a photo there so it?s not the best ones.

Hi Per,

It’s a new one on me. Difficult to see how far up it goes, but perhaps someone was attempting to screen off the plugs/leads to stop radio interference?

Cheers - Richard ('67 S3)

Hi Per, That does look to be homemade. Mine looks like this…

I believe Richard is correct (again  ) it is for radio suppression - albeit not terribly effective if I remember correctly.

Regards,

I took one off my stromberg Elan. Still have it. I was for radio suppression, I believe, when the HT leads went around and through the back. Mine is a bit shaped with curved sides. Presume from factory fit???

Beat me to it. Yes just like that.

Mike

Thank you all,
Never thought of radio suppression but it really seems to be the answer. Since I don’t have a radio in the car I think I will remove it. My plate is definitely home made.

The Lotus radio suppression kit consisted of an alumnium plate at the rear of the head and also one bolted over the valley between the cam covers above the spark plugs - just because it looks home made does not mean its not the Lotus original fitment !!! :unamused:

cheers

A wireless; in an Elan? What were they thinking of?

Copyright, BBC.

Yep, Rohan is correct. There was a third part, which was a shield around the coil.

And an assortment of braided earth straps too I think.

Regards,

If you can hear the wireless you are going too slowly…
