so this is the Rob Walker elan that was taken from assembly [#26-4576] and built up to go racing that is for sale at 175000 pounds??? ed [sorry Ian Walker ]
Rob Walker - last of a breed , F1 privateer and sponsor of Stirling Moss lotus rides for awhile
Ian walker - active in production racers like the elan 26r
Johnny Walker - indirect sponsor of Moss and much better to spend time on or with vs speculation on the speculative pricing of old racing cars driven by old racing drivers -
Hey, for that money you could expect a car which would at least get through scrutineering. Allegedly.

when I teched cars between races we were more concerned about safety and could not disqualify a car for legality or conformity —that was the competitors job and I wasn’t allowed to tech any car in my class —ed
To be fair, the rad doesn’t look wider or thicker than the stock Marston radiator on the S1/S2.
Paddy
what exactly is or are the correct parameters for a rad as per the appendix I can find no reference to material used in the rule book or reference to size ???-----the original in my car is a great humping steel one from 1964 and had to be repaired --no opinions please only direct quotes from the FIA rule book --mine states–appendix H --2–PRODUCTION SEDANS —The use of any water radiator is allowed provided there is no change to the coachwork chassis or internal structure of the automobile to accommodate its use -------AND AS TO BRAKE RESERVOIRS -appendix J -1—the USE OF ANY DUAL MASTER CYLINDERS AND\OR pressure equalizing device is permitted servo assist systems are free ----no mention of reservoirs at all ----I assume they hope you will use some -------in section 4 sub 4.2 under general requirements ------'PRODUCTION SPORTS CAR —THE ONLY MENTION OF RADIATORES is that you may duct to them ----it states also-- the car is to be raced as delivered to the public through manufacturers outlets and may be back dated or up dated with in specs of a recognized make and model —
-thanks --ed
- the yellow car did have adjustable rear A-frames and adjustable spring platforms though, and that is for sure not FIA OK …!

Authorized modifications —production sports car --4-- --4.3 sec B 3 the make and type of shock absorbers may be changed but not their number or system of operation[ie leaver or telescopic] or their system of and points of attachment --shock absorbers may have load bearing capacity [eg gas filled or ‘coil over’] ----FIA also have no rule on left or right handed drive —wheel attachment [ bolt on or knock off] only that that they would like them to stay attached to the car during the event ]----sub 14 reads —steering arms -Pittman arms and steering component parts MAY BE MODIFIED RERNFORCED OR SUBSTITUTED but the rack and pinion worm and selector etc may not be changed ----perhaps the F.I.A --so often quoted here --may like to be informed of the rule changes sweeping 'THIS SCEPTERED ISLE and the number of pontificating experts available for their events --BUY THE BOOK -I HATE TO BE A CARMUGEON HERE BUT —ANY ONE READING THESE UNFOUNDED OPINIONS AND CONTEMPLATING VINTAGE RACING WOULD RUN AWAY AND TAKE UP GOLF -thanks ed
As English is not my tongue, I am not 100% sure of what you are aiming at here…However, I sense that there are different opinions abt. what is allowed and not under FIA rules…On my hand, I refer to the regulations under FIA App.K , and J of the period. These are what we are trying to relate to in Europe, and can easily be downloaded from the FIA home page. No need to buy any book. And, just to be a real pr… ; - the Elan 26R is not a “production sports car” according to App.K, it is a Competition Grand Touring car . ![]()
Furthermore, your coilovers are OK, but in Period F, 62-65, the spring platforms must be fixed.
(Having studied App.K for months now, as responsible for the Norwegian Historic Racing Club, my opinions are well founded…) ![]()

Dag —FIA rules are FIA rules whether in Tuktiuktuk North West Territories or Bora Bora or East Chippendale -----GT 1 2 OR 3 OR CALLED a b c SEDAN -----EXCEPT [ show room stock and the Irish Racing Association
]–all the countries rule books are based on them -thats what the INTERNATIONAL says —rad size and material doesn’t come into it and the only main thing about suspension is you cant change the pick up points --all this self important twaddle about oooooh I don’t like this or that is definitely wrong is pointless -----I have had many competitors come to me claiming the wiget on car 44 is illegal after talking to an ‘expert’ only to be proven wrong when the rule book comes out --when it comes to race cars opinions are like a33holes —ever body has one -but they are just that --opinions —the rule books solves mostly all -the interpretation of fixed —can be construed to read fixed in one place —adjustable and fixed in one place etc etc and as many variations as competitors can dream to get an advantage -now if the rule reads non adjustable perch and some one has a machined part to improve the spring rate in the spring perch that’s a different can of springs --is that legal ???-is that adjusted??? is the spring part of the perch??? is the perch part of the shock? if so than the perch is free as the shock is a free item and can be adjustable —ad infinitum --I envy you your undertaking ----during the Porch series one car was 2 seconds a lap faster consistently tear downs checks on the car revealed nothing only after the series ended it was RUMOURED that the wining car had the cigarette lighter hooked up to a servo that richened the mid range --so when the driver pushed the lighter in he got a 4 second boost and it automatically canceled when the lighter popped out at temperature ----another had his pit area behind the pits so he drove down pit lane and around to the his pit around to lane and out on the track --tripping the transponder every time —it was an endurance race and he won until the 40 second lap times on a 1 :50 track was reported by a canny competitor–they will keep you on your toes --BTW ther is no classification for 26r in gt 1 just elan 1600 s1 2 3 in the 78 79 80 rule book ----ed
Vintage racing? No Elans are eligible for Vintage racing in the UK, the cut-off date being 1931. ![]()
oh thats right I forget you are about 200 years behind over there – 1931 chevs and 5 window duce [32] coups race at the drag strips here make about 800 hp —26R rad indeed ----TT picked your pocket if you paid more than 80 or 90 pounds with the rad fan included —check out Summit racing equipment --P.T. Barnum was right -ed ![]()
I have been to numerous SVRA (vintage) Races- not only are 26r’s and standard Elans not in the same class, they don’t even run together in the same race.
any documentation I can find says there was no designation 26r they were just raced as Elan or Elan GT -----the denotation 26r is fairly new to me and primarily used to bilk money from people ----I must go and work on mine now --so feel free to talk among your selves ----thanks --ed
-obviously there are more than one world out there…Sorry, but I have to be present in mine… ![]()

Presumably you didn’t “find” the FIA/RAC Homolgation papers number 127 or 527 then? If you had you would have seen, on the 11th April 1964, that it read “FIA Rec Number 127, Lotus Elan 26/R, …Alloy cross-flow radiator has separate header tank which gives a total water capacity of 8.5 litres”.
some of us don’t let the truth get in the way of a chance to perhaps make a point JUST AS YOU STATED ON PAGE 227 -OF CHRIS HARVYS BOOK WHEN THE BOOK ONLY HAS 192 PAGES I don theen so lucy -----ed
Not quite sure who you are addressing there, or what you are trying to tell them.
Anyway, as an engineer, I would really like to hear more about the radiator in your car, “-----the original in my car is a great humping steel one from 1964”
I’m not sure that I have ever seen a steel radiator in any car, let alone a fly-weight racing model from the world’s master of weight reduction. ![]()
ok perhaps I should have said-regarding your sudden and dramatic ‘discovery’ of an alleged FIA homologation paper -what a convenient and timely piece of information --very timely indeed ----the rad is just a thicker version of a standard Elan tin rad ----not breathed upon by ‘experts’ -and a copy of the alleged FIA document would certainly strengthen your credibility-
--however when entering a race over ere they only ask for the car make and model on the entry paperwork --[not the entire history ]- log books asked for weight --engine displacement --body material --chassis type – ----etc only things covering class legality ----cars here were entered as ----make --Lotus ------- Model —Elan --in fact by 2002 SCCA doesnt even have elan listed —only lotus Cortina — and 7 in f prod and e prod europa e prod are listed --ed
