1966 FHC on Bring a Trailer

I recall this being here, which I believe the guy had imported from the UK.

Does anyone know the history of this? I have a strong desire to bid on this car and any input would be very helpful.

Thanks!

You are correct, i cant find the thread. Probably could have on the old forum

found it

The front crossmember on that frame looks decidedly iffy.

Definitely iffy and the welds dont inspire confidence in the quality of the work hiding behind the welds

The pictures of the front suspension also show repairs behind the uprights, which is unusual.

I wonder if the vinyl wrap causes any issues for the fiberglass underneath? It’s certainly crossed my mind as a potential solution to my crap paint.

I just wonder how long it will take to get used to RHD… but I LOVE everything else.

My plan is to vinyl wrap the bumpers with a bright chrome vinyl to try and make it more visible

Did you buy the car? Nice work.

Didn’t meet reserve.

But did they work out a deal after the reserve was not met?

Usually BaT would say so if that happened, not always true though.

Alright, since you are all very curious and BaT’s offer window has officially closed… Bryan and I came to an agreement and a deposit has been sent. I am VERY excited to be able to own this car. I recall seeing it here and chatted with Bryan on LotusTalk prior to him listing it. I’m lucky that he was willing to accept my offer, which I will keep private.

If you had seen it, I had to reluctantly sell off my Spyder chassis and that whole project earlier this year so while it would be GREAT to have that Spyder chassis now I am excited to have a completed Elan that will be (nearly) ready to drive immediately when the truck drops it off.

I will create a thread once the car has arrived here in SoCal. I already have a few items I plan to change and make ‘my own’

Congrats! You’ve gone from a garage full of parts to a complete Elan, and I’ve gone in the other direction!

Thanks! I appreciate your comment too, I had a little battle at the end with another Elan member/ former owner too.

I joked for a while that if I was smart I wouldn’t build an Elan, piece by piece. I had about given up an Elan, at least for now, because I was committed to getting an Aircooled 911, but I loved my 996 and couldn’t justify spending a lot of money AND sell my 996 to get an inferior Aircooled 911… and now I don’t need to worry. Just have to convince my Wife that its ok to have the 996 AND an Elan, in addition to the DD.

I have an aircooled 911 and a FHC Elan. The 911 is not inferior to the 996. But the Elan is better than both. Congrats. You’ll love the car.

When an aircooled 911 g-body was $30-40k, maybe it would be worth it, but when I have to spend more than double what my 996 is worth, I’m certainly not getting double the car. Mine is one of the first 996s made (4/98 build) and it’s drive by cable with no traction control. Mine is lighter than a 993 and on-par with most 964. So it’s hard to justify selling a good car and then doubling that money just to get an aircooled. And I’ve wanted one my whole life so this wasn’t an easy decision. They’ve just gotten overvalued and living in LA most owners are poseurs so it just goes against everything I believe.

I’m happy with my purchase because it also means the 996 isn’t going anywhere (at least until my wife throws a fit, which hopefully she won’t)

:ok_hand:Many congrats. :tada: Very Nice Elan as written in my comment on BaT after auction. Have lots of fun with her and… safe driving!

If your spouse is angry, just tell her she’ll always know where you’re out playing…

Agreed 2mAn. When you stop by a cars and coffee with an aircooled Porsche, you’re one of many. You almost never see an Elan, particularly a FHC. Many car fans won’t even know what it is. They are special cars. I think you made the right call.
