I’'ve got a 1973 +2S130/5, with Lumenition and a sports coil, with some standard looking blue ignition leads. The coil looks to be in the original silly position too close the carbs.
I had a phone conversation with magnecor UK yesterday and I’m none the wiser. I’ve had the KV85 Competition silicon ignition leads from Magneor before and they’re great. Can anyone help me out with what set I need, as they were asking about the distributor cap and the way the leads are connected here etc., and I can’t get to the car at the moment,…
In the list on the Magnecor site there is ONE set for the +2, but 1967-72, which includes a DDB101 distributor cap to take the bigger 8-8.5mm cable. Is this the correct one for my '73?
So you reckon the set with the replacement cap will be correct, when it says +2 until '72 (the only set they have), there aren’t any changes after that to the distributor that’ll make this set not fit?
Right, if no one has any other advice before mnday I’m trusting you and spending my ?65 on the lovely red silicone KV85 competition set with cap… A good investment…
Take care, using a top entry cap will usually result in the leads/lead boots that connect the leads to the cap touching the aluminum (good conductor) inlet manifold, while there is no safety worries this can cause a slight misfire on occasion particularly if damp.
The twincams were meant to have a side exit lucas cap, with copper cored leads and screw in suppressed caps, I recently did this in mine, it cost approx ?25 inc cap, lead (bought by the metre and cut to fit) and caps, along with a pocket full of boots etc.
The result, a happy afternoon making them (I got all the parts at an autojumble all brand new although you can buy them from shops / internet if you dont mind paying more), a genuine period look, and having had the car rolling roaded at my local ford/twink specialist and set up properly 132 bhp at the wheels and approx 145 at the flywheel!
the rather expensive kit from Magnecor actually includes a modified side entry cap, to take the lovely 8.5mm stainless core silicon plug leads which otherwise are too thick… … so I’ve been right in my assumption of correct dizzy cap then, which is good.
I replaced my dizzy about 15 years ago (!) with a unit supplied by Aldon Automotive (I think it was a 45D4 unit). It’s has a side entry screw on cap like the original unit but uses push on leads with brass ends rather than the ones which are fixed to the leads directly. I assume I would need a different lead kit?
