I treated myself to a dehumidifier this winter - an absorbent rather than a refrigeration type. But, of course, how often it is running depends on the target humidity I set. Currently 60%. Is that low enough?
The previous refrigerant one was clearly ineffective in the cold and ran a lot to little purpose, so I would like to use this one efficiently to try & recoup the expense.
The article is misleading in that by “setting it high” they meant a lower relative humidity. 40% will kill dust mites so I’d put it there. 40% is also about as high as it gets in Death Valley which goes below 20% in summer just for perspective.
Suppose it depends on what part of the world you are in and how well your garage is sealed in UK I would stick with 55-60% RH if you try to go too low it will be running all the while and may not get to target if sealing is poor. Clean a bit of sheet steel with wire wool leave it in there see if rust forms on it
