Now I wonder why that is ??? It cant be tariffs can it, as I hear you were promised that China would pay those ???. Maybe if someone buys one they can send a bill for the increase to President Xi with an explanation note saying you were promised by a well known politician that he would pay

sorry for the attempted humor

cheers

I have one advertised in the forum market place.

I previously posted one over to the States about 10 years ago, a courier was organised by the buyer to come from London Heathrow area, collect it, palletize it and despatch, doing all the transfer documentation for customs.

This one could be done the same, I’ll give full support for the job to be completed.

It’s gearbox, Speedo drive and gear lever only, without bell housing.

Picture attached ( bell housing to be removed before sale.

The gearbox has been professionally rebuilt with any new parts, shafts, gears, bearings, seals and gaskets.
It’s in A1 condition.

Price is £1500 Ono.

I put in a new T5z .

I & others would like your comparison to a Lotus 4 speed please @cabc26b
Also, where did you source it (do post a link please) and did you order a custom gear set ?

Kind Regards

Like cabc26b, I, too, used a T5z. First gear is 2.95 and fifth is a .73, although .63 is availble as
‘standard’ Modern Driveline (aka, MDL) built the box. The .73 is custom by MDL.

We’re stepping on Tony’s ‘Wanted’ thread and need to start another for discussion of the T5

All,
Enjoying the discussion. I have decided to not do the conversion. If I had someone who I could just give the car to, with a bunch of cash, I would do it. I am not up physically any longer to do jobs like this.

If someone out there in the northeast USA has a solution and wants me to pay them to do it, give me a message. Otherwise, I am enjoying the converstation.

I’m sure for somewhere between ridiculous and absurd $$ Greg and I would consider doing it

H20hamelan - it’s hard to beat the slick shifting 3 rail gear box in the elan . The T5 is not effortless like our 4 speeds but it’s hardly a compromise. Use the tremec oil and allow it time to warm up ( big gears lots of oil) . Another plus is you can’t stress it out with a big twincam .

Tony
A friend here in central PA had a 5 speed installed in his Lotus 7. I can inquire if you’re interested. I’m sure you would have to supply the parts.

Sure, get me the details. Asking doesn’t hurt. Thinking about it though, the only time it would come in handy is on long trips at high speeds. With my other Lotus cars, I would probably use them for something like that.

Hi tdskip
Not sure if you have seen this, but here in Aussie we use the Isuzu 5 speed for the elan. A box that was used in the Holden Gemini twin cam version - gearbox is close ratio
Here’s a video I made just after installation was complete.

Enjoy

Nice work!

Thanks for sharing that

Your are most welcome.
If you want to read more about the 5 speed conversion
start here: 5 Speed gear box modification and install-Lotus elan-Part 1. — Lotus-Élan-Resource-Hub.
I’m still working on the blog articles, but lots more info here.
Since I shot the video the gear stick has been shortened by 30mm, and the shift is much better now, but as mentioned in the video, it was made long on purpose for fine tuning later.
At the end of each article there is a link to click which will take you to the next part.
You can skim over the info or delve in for a deep read.

wonder if the 8 speed would fit?

have for DBA

or a sequential on the T5?

Hi Tony

Steve Rineer said you may contact him about his experience with the 5 speed. 717 554 8808.

Are you going to PVGP? What are you bringing? I’m bring my recently restored Plus 2.

Regard
Chris Herr

Chris,
Going to LOG, but not to the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. I am bringing my Emira and Sprint to LOG. At least that is my plan now.

Tony V

It doesn’t look like anyone’s mentioned what is likely the most common Elan 5-speed upgrade, that of Alan Voigts T9 conversion kit. See: Gearbox Overhauls for Classic Cars

He and his brother have been producing these for decades, and they’ve been shipped and installed on likely hundreds of Elans.

You can have him install a gear set that matches the stock Elan’s 1-4 ratios. It works with the stock speedometer, if you’re willing to trim a bit off of the front tunnel flange to allow the speedo gear adapter to fit in the tunnel (which I did, not a big deal at all). The transmission he supplies comes with his custom tail piece which locates the shift lever in essentially the stock Elan position. You will need to obtain a new gaiter - the throw to 5th and reverse is greater than the stock gaiter can handle, and it’s not in the kit.

Likely the shift feel is not as ‘snickety’ as stock, and the throws are a bit longer, but it’s plenty good for my taste. Cruising at 70 at 3000 RPM is nice (again, rough estimates).

I did my conversion a few years ago, and have driven the car all over the US since. Here’s my thread on the experience, which includes 1owner69Elan’s experience as well: My Voigt 5-speed conversion

Yes, I agree, the Alan Voigt Type9 5speed conversion is great. Much better for relaxed cruising at speed.
I wouldn’t now want to go back to a 4speed in my +2.

For anyone one following on and contemplating getting the Voigt Type9 I would highly recommend you pay the extra for the 2.89 ratio first gear which more or less matches the original 4speed 1st gear ratio.

Alan.

Agree, and for those thinking of the T5, get the T5z, whose ratios (1-4) are nearly identical
to the semi close 4 speed.
