Does anyone have experience using the rubber seals for the front and rear sump-to-block sealing? I have always used the cork but just looking for user reports as I am at that point in rebuild.

Hi Pete, I presume you are talking about the seals with the six bolt crankshaft, I never use the cork seals, on the front (timing case) I use a length of round rubber seal cut to length, on the rear I have replaced the oil seal carrier with the later X flow carrier which takes the Xflow seal, the channel on the Lotus engine takes the cork which is narrow and will not accept the Xflow seal.
When I rebuilt my engine in 1995 the gasket kit came with cork seals.
I know from experience that over time cork loses it’s elasticity and will eventually leak.
I hand cut seals from Nitrile rubber and they are still sealing fine.
I’ll try to find some of that round rubber for next time.

Here is a pic of the Lotus and Xflow rear seal carrier with the Xflow rubber sump seal, as can be seen the channel for the seal is wider on the Xflow carrier.

I wasn’t aware that the seals were for x-flow. They look like they would fit the tc seal housing and somehow I have three sets leading me to believe they were a direct substitute. On the rubber seal - it appears to be solid, what is the diameter and application?

At first glance they do look like they will fit but a closer look will show they are too wide for the T.C. housing (front & rear)
The rubber I use for the front is a solid round section of 7mm diameter,I dont know its application, I just get it from a bearing/0 ring supplier.

Your graphic showed me that I actually have a xflow seal carrier. Dug around and found the tc carrier. Now I see why the cork didn’t fit correctly. The part number on the tc is 2730E6335-A with a MCD4 cast in it and the xflow p/n begins with 2730E633xx ( unreadable) with a MCD2 cast in it.
