Spigot bearing - quick question

When putting the new needle roller bearing in the 6 bolt crank, Miles’ book states that “the bearing must be the right way round with the lip seal to the rear”. OK, rear of what? The hole or the rear of the engine? I guess it should be the rear of the engine, but the language is not clear.

Can anyone put me right before I push in the new bearing?

Also, I take it that the flywheel bolts do not have washers…

Its a lip seal so its stops the needle roller grease coming out. NO washers

As Craven says the bearing has a seal in the end, I have seen them with a seal at both ends but usually only at one end which must be towards the rear of the car.

Thanks for the prompt responses… I have been supplied with two almost identical bearings from the same manufacturer - INA, via UK Lotus parts suppliers with different reference numbers. As far as I can see the only difference is the bearing numbers as per the photos below.

Any ideas as to the need for two numbers? I spent some time looking up the bearing references with no indication of why they are different…

Check O/D there was a change in crankshaft hole size. Off the top of my head, just a few 0.001?

Both bearings have the same dimensions, probably one number was superseded in the bearing Manufacture’s catalogue’s database so I would not worry about it.
I have never read anything regarding a change of OD of the hole for the bearing of 6 bolt cranks and I have fitted them to TC and Xflow engines with no problems.

The information Brian shows indicates that the bearings are the same size. I don?t understand why the numbers are different. Bearing companies have a technical help line which I have always found very knowledgeable and helpful. If you still have any reservations a phone call on Monday should put your mind at rest.

I think INA are part of the Shaefler group.
