S4 Elan

Mark,

The short answer is no however my S4 has an ammeter to the left of the radio and it’s a left hand steering car. I drilled a new hole to the right of the radio and moved the fuel gauge there. Then I installed a new Smiths ammeter where the fuel gauge used to be. Works for me!

No ammeter was ever fitted to any Elan as standard (I know they were in Plus2s!).

It was quite a popular additional dial to fit in the 60s and 70s. My first Sprint PO had fitted one below the fuel gauge and to the right of the windscreen wash switch. I never liked it there.

In fact a lot of contemporary cars were fitted with extra gauges by enthusiastic owners. Fitting ‘rev counters’ to Minis was a favourite, as well as oil pressure gauges.

If it’s of any help; my 1970 S4 SE original dash had an Ampmeter positioned as you describe.
I’m sure someone will have the definitive answer.

Errm one for the guys with knowledge.
Is it:-
Ammeter
Ameter
Ampmeter
Ampermeter
or what?
English & / or American spelling

Hi Mark

My dash doesn’t have an ammeter. The dash is half out at the moment as I’ve been renovating the heater and finishing off the wiring refurb.

Are you around at the moment?

Richard

Original owner of S4 & it does not have an ammeter.

It must have been a popular mod, my Sprint had one when I bought the car, although I had the hole filled when I had the dash reveneered.

Checkout all the books and reference material and you’ll see that all Elans (S1-4) didn’t have an ammeter, as Tim said, it was a popular mod in the 60’s and 70’s.

I was thinking about adding an ampmeter in just the location suggested. I would like to find one that is consistent with the rest of the S4’s gauges, where and what should I be looking for? Thanks. Dan '70 S4 SE

Definitely one of the most popular mods. My Sprint has a Voltmeter in that position. Apart from being very useful I think it looks quite good. That space to the left of the radio is ideal for a small gauge. It looks like it belongs there.
