“I recommend the Genuine GM motors as they are made by Bosch. Slightly smaller and lighter than the Dorman units.”
I haven’t seen the GM units, so I can’t compare, but the Dorman units seemed well made. I find I always get ripped off by the import process, there is a queue of ‘agents’ with their hand out trying to take money from me. Given the low price of the motors on Amazon, that seemed the way to go. I bought 2 of each so I had spares.
I haven’t fitted it, but Michael’s kit seems very well made - I am happy to recommend it.
I’ve made this upgrade and highly recommend it. As the Brits would say, it’s brilliant.
A couple of notes:
Mike has added 10-32 fasteners to the kit, so you don’t have to source them. Lockwashers, too. They’ve got T–25 Torx heads. I put plain washers under those to protect the plastic mounting lugs of the motor. You’ll still need to provide the 1/4-28 x 1/2” bolts on your own.
To get a driver on the bottom 2 of the 10-32 fasteners, I had to take a die grinder to the inner door skin. See pic. On the right door, I drilled an access hole as an access slot would have been so deep.
Oh, and if anybody out there thinks that maybe the frame can fit back in the door with the motor spacer and attachment plate already bolted on, it won’t. It’s probably pretty obvious to most people, and most won’t be doing this as part of a cable repair, so the frame won’t be out of the car anyway, but for some reason I just assumed it would work without looking very closely at how long those mounting studs are.
I’m keeping kits in stock, just sold kit #70. To order a kit, please send me a private message including your shipping address and whether you want me to supply motors as well. I need the shipping address so I can give an accurate shipping cost. Payment will be via Paypal to an address that will be shared via PM.
I am attempting to bring my windows “back to life.” I may be pursuing your kit. I am gathering from the comments and photos above that the window frame does NOT need to be removed? Thanks - Kevin
For anybody reading this thread and on the fence about getting Mike’s kit. Do it. Super easy to install, no rattles, lighter, smooth, fast, and invisible. As noted above, those two bottom 10-32 Torx fasteners are a bit of a pain to get to with a driver - I replaced them with hex heads to come in at them from the side - no problem.
I just received Mike’s window upgrade kit. It is well-engineered and beautifully made. I’ve ordered the Genuine GM motors from RockAuto. Since I’m doing a major restoration on my Elan, it will be a while before I can get these installed, but very much looking forward to it.
I’ll keep this alive with another thumbs-up. The pieces are well made and fit correctly. The instructions are thorough, to the point where I even managed to figure out how to wire up the connector without using any spare bits – which is saying something. Thank you!
