s3 elan front no plate

Guys,I put my 1968 s3 elan through its MOT today in N.Ireland[a real mot].
The mot man was not happy with the front no plate arrangement,as it is not ‘mounted on a black plate’.
I explained about the black back ground etc.
Eventually, after much discussion, they let me through, mostly because the car has passed for the last 13 years in the same guise,in the same place.
I was warned that it will not pass next time.
Any suggestions,thanks

Go to a different MOT centre!
Actually, you can get the number painted on or have a sticker made up. You see it in all the old racing photos. Not ideal but that’s why I’d choose the former option.

Welcome. Please notice that you made multiple posts…

Yes, go elsewhere… :unamused:

My 1973-registered 1972-manufactured +2 had a black-on-yellow one at the back, with white digits on the grille at the front. My (friendly!) MoT station queried it once, but only in passing. It now has a silver-on-black rear plate, but this is probably also not quite legal since this is supposedly only for pre-73 cars. There’s NO WAY I’m having a reflective plate on the front to either block the radiator flow or scoop up speed bumps… :open_mouth:

I don’t think the stick-on type is technically legal now - it’s supposed to be on a ‘flat vertical surface’ (so the Gatso’s can see them?!) and there’s not many of those on the front of an Elan… That is why some modern cars (they all look the same to me :exclamation:  ) have those awful-looking offset ones to avoid blocking the radiator.

Stick a normal plate on the front, go to MOT, remove again afterwards.
