Removal of seat back panels

My 1971 Plus 2 seats have what appears to be black plastic rivets or push pins holding the backs in place to the seat back frame. The fasteners don’t have a screw-able head on them.

The seats are the smaller black vinyl covered affairs with a sort of integral head rest. Sorry, can’t take a photo because they are at the trimmer’s shop now.

Are these fasteners removable? Do you have to destroy them in the removal process?

The trimmer figured one may get them off by pushing in on the centre of the dome; appears to be a sort pin in there.

If they have to be drilled or destroyed in the removal process, are replacements available?

thx

Hi Stu

On our +2 the black fasteners have a center pin which is like a nail and it expands the black plastic inner plug. They are hard to get out and I have used small screw driver and carefully worked around nail head and gotten them out enough to grab head with a side cutter and carefully pull out nail.
I think that is the same fastner has in th trunk carpet panels.

Looks & sounds like a ‘push rivet’. You could try knocking the centre pins all the way through to release them, and if you can retrieve the pins from inside the seat it may be possible to re-use them, if they are undamaged…

An identical match may be difficult to find, but similar types are available, e.g. http://www.richco-inc.com/e_group_details.asp?seccode=150&grpcode=C1120

Thanks guys. We managed to get them out. Hopefully re-usable.

just looking at this old posting as i am faced with the same issue . The seats need restitching and in order to remove the cobvers the back has to come off. it’s held in with these plastic rivets . Anyone know of a source in UK pls? ( the hyperlink in the old post below is no good anymore but here’s a new hyperlink uk.rs-online.com/web/p/products/ … 0wodGssJmw

You can probably just push the center pin through… pull the cover off & then re-use it if you can find the shaft…

I just had some repair done on one of my seats and the upholsterer could not re-use those and went with screws instead. No big deal; it’s what just about anybody over the years would probably have done.
