Does anybody have a Champion part number for the later (S4- Sprint) oil filter? I need to change mine and as usual shops like Halfords don’t list the car.

Not sure what brands Halfords keep, but the FRAM part number is PH2872 and the Mann P/N W719/5
Try that with your local motor factor

I use FRAM part number PH2870A. Anyone know the difference?

Frank I think one has a check valve and the other does not.

In case you’ve never seen it, this engineering student in Milwaukee did a rather extensive teardown of most of the major US manufacturers’ filters.

I’ve always used Fram PH966B which is probably what the Robinshaw/Ross book meant when they printed PH996B?
I see this book lists it as the same as that fitted to ‘Leyland Mini, 1100, 1300, Maxi & Allegro range’ - maybe Halfords have a (proper!) Mini listed…
Sorry, it doesn’t help with your question about the Champion part number though. Why not try another shop?! :wink:

I always use the oil filter for the mk 1 VW Golf (US Rabbit?) but not supplied by after market suppliers, I get the genuine one from the VW agent, no idea who makes it for VW but I assume VW have some sort of quality control as they would become responsible if engines started having problems. It also has the check valve in it to prevent drain back.

I was not too ‘fussed’ about make and asked for Champion as I hoped they were better made than Halford’s own brand (and to be honest, it was the only other brand I could remember)…

Does the Elan need a check valve in the filter. It appears some people fit filters with one and some without? I assume the check valve is to stop the oil pressure from getting too high in the system?

I suppose we now need to take a ‘vote’ to see which brand is best??

Why not just get a Lotus one from the usual suspects ?

Richard, The last Lotus one I bought (many years ago) did not have the check valve but maybe they have them now?

Carl, the the check valve is to prevent drainback overnight, cars with hydralic tappits rattle on start up untill thy get oil pressure, the check valve helps to keep the filter full and get oil pressure quicker.
