Lucas Gold Coil and Ballast Resistor Question

Hi all
Hoping this might be a simple question to answer. I have replaced my standard coil with a new old stock Lucas Gold Coil that is bright yellow. It says on it to only be used with 1.5ohmns. Also when I removed the old coild there was a rectangular thing bolted to the side of the bracket but from the wiring I could not work out what it was doing and suspected it could be a ballast resistor but the wiring seemed wrong. It had a resistance of 2.5ohmns.

My question therefore is, do I need a ballast resistor with my new coil and if so is the rectangular thing on the old coil bracket one? If so, is it suitable for my coil and how should it be wired in?
Thanks
Andy

If you look under the coil it should have the voltage stamped on it either 12 or 9 volts, if it is 9 volts then you have to have a resistor otherwise you will cook the coil.

Thanks. I inspected the coil, couldn’t find any numbers and it said ballasted coil only so I played safe and put the ballast resistor in and she seems to be running very nicely compelte with ignitor ignition now as well.
