Ignition key barrel

Hi,
I lost the keys to my car, and I have turned my house upside down without finding them. So I guess I have to remove the ignition barrel and exchange it for a new one…

What is the easiest route for this? Do I need to remove the whole of the steering lock/ignition assembly? Or is it possible to get the barrel out in situ? As I need a new barrel, I don’t mind using violence in the process as long as the assembly/steering lock is not damaged…

/Ulf

I think it?s unlikely you will be able to get the barrel out without removing the lock. If it?s a steering column lock, there are 2 ?anti tamper? bolts that are designed to shear their heads when turned.

They may have been replaced over the years, but otherwise the advice is to remove with care.

Others who have done it may chip in

Regards
Richard

May be worth nosing around on triumph forums ?

Lock barrels are designed so that it is only (relatively) easy to get the barrel out when you have the key.

Your local locksmith can pick it in seconds with a jiggler , you can then remove it

Thanks for replies

Ok, I understand the ignition key/steering lock assembly is actually a Triumph item. Does anybody know from which car (I have a late Elan +2). Is it from a TR6? I have found similar, but not identical, parts from Triumph suppliers. Does anybody know if they are interchangeable?

I believe it is from GT6 Mk3 - Waso was the original manufacturer, replacements available here - https://rimmerbros.com/Item–i-GRID008089

All in all you will probably find it less damaging to get a local locksmith to fit a new barrel for you.

Many barrels are standard sizes so you wouldn’t need to go finding the external bits from other cars.

Ages ago I fitted my S3 doors with more secure barrels that came from filing-cabinet locks, these ones have tooth notches on BOTH edges of the key.

It was great fun one time when I left my car too long in a soho steet and I returned just as the Police were trying to open the doors with a massive bunch of keys. None of them fitted <img src="//lotus-elan-net-cdn.nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com/original/1X/442e459c5ced45cb70e8a05e77e07cea6fee4928.gif" width="15" height="17" alt="" title="Mr. Green"/>

isn’t ronnie scott’s and a good jazz record store (moe’s?) in soho?..luv it, been there at R.S. one time had scottish scallops as main dish and billy eckstines group, plus wifey-pooh sandy

Try to find the Key Numbers in your documents. They are like “FS 123” or two letters, three Numbers. Baby Elans had two different Numbers , one for Ignition and Doors, one for Boot and Glovebox. If You could undo a door lock barrel, it might show the three digit number that You could order at the usual suspects, like Limora or so.

I think that the replacement parts you need are listed here, perhaps somebody could confirm?

See if there is an Auto locksmith near you, it may work out cheaper and easier to call somebody out.
