Holes in the floor

Am I right to assume there should not be any holes in the floor of my Elan? I have 3 or 4 * 3/8 inch holes behind the seats. Otherwise I’ll glass them up before fitting my rollcage and carpet/mat…

Greg

I’m not that familiar with an S2 but doesn’t the battery box get held down somehow behind one of the seats?

Yes, it does get held down behind the seats - but there are 2 bobbins bonded into the bulkhead for that… Are there supposed to be holes there for drainage? Or is it just happy coincidence?!

Greg

you will need 2 holes in the floors one on each side to allow the water to escape —or grow some interesting mould cultures - -ed

:stuck_out_tongue:

I found 5 holes in floor both sides when I removed the carpets recently. There seemed to be a pattern as both sides matched, but there did not appear to be any matching holes in the carpets.
I glassed them over before getting new carpets fitted over the winter.
If I need new holes for mats, I shall drill new ones.

…and though the holes were very small, they had to count them all…
behind the seats on my S2 are only two holes each side for seat rail fixings, no fibre glass work on that area, so should be original. Only the two bobbins are involved in holding the battery via its cover.

Anna - have you a photo? My car didn’t have any seat rails in it, so I’ve no idea where the holes should be! And just to be clear - you don’t have any drainage holes?

Thanks! Greg

Greg,
my car was missing some seat rails - the outer ones. They rusted out…
But the holes are still in place and so are the bolts. To my opinion any “drainage” would only lead to water entering the car via splash from the front wheels. Any other opinions?
One shouldn’t take so much water that drainage is needed - it would mean to park the car outside in rain with hood down. First it would soak the felt and then drain through tiny holes :unamused: The felt would stay moisted.
Anyway, drainage should be at the deepest point!
I can take some shots of the remaining seat rail so you know where to fit it. You might find the remains of the drillings if you know where to look.
Just had a look at the photos of your car: I think the drillings are visible - one in front of the chassis bobbin, near side.
maybe both ones offside. Offside floor photo seems to show one of the rear ones. Have a look from the underside.

Anna

maybe a picture will help.

two bobbins on far left will be for battery box
bobbin on top left is for frame
hole to left of frame bobbin is for grounding battery
small holes across top are for seat rails

This is a LHD car.

hope this helps

Could be attachment points for a bilge pump? :sunglasses:
My old Mk14 Elite used to gather vast amounts of water you could hear it slopping around in the sills & the floor was like an ice rink in winter. Heel & toeing was a challenge.

I thought you were supposed to pull out the large icebergs out before you set forth on your rounds?

Gary

I didn’t think about that, the Captain said everything would be alright & the band was still playing

It can be a titanic struggle to get them out.
