I have now got the white over handles that go to open the heater vents for the feet.
I thought that this would be the end of it, but noooo!
There must be something that the white handles fasten over, but I have no reference as to what it is! Can anyone give me any photos of what it is that I am looking for? Or better yet sell me a pair?
The pic shows the underside of the bracket you are missing which looks like a simple T shape spot welded to the flap. The handle is retained by one screw and the function of the bracket is just to stop it rotating. Shouldn’t be difficult to make something up to do the job and either epoxy bond it to the flap or secure it using the screw that fixes the handle. Alternatively you could bond something into the handle itself which engages with the slot in the flap to do the same job.
I know these flaps were used on many variants of Smiths heater systems of the day. One I know is the old LR Defender - so I found this: cgi.ebay.co.uk/LANDROVER-HEATER- … 286.c0.m14
I seem to remember that the old Mini had something similar - but the memory is not what it was.
Why not contact Smiths in an attempt to find someone in their engineering offfice that may be interested enough to help?
Jason,
The picture on the “oldelanman” post showed the secret. The hairpin spring that holds the flap open also holds it closed. It’s an interaction between the spring and the lever arm that it’s attached to. There’s no clasp or tab to hold the flap in the closed position.
It’s fortunate that I got my engine reattached to the chassis today so that I could move the framework that I use because I’m too cheap to buy an engine hoist
