Hello all,
Am in the middle of some reconditioning on a recent S2 purchase and found something that seems interesting, which makes me ask questions. I am rebuilding the brakes and suspension and found something with the drivers front shock of interest. I have attached a photo to review. The shock has a very long top stud, 3 1/2" and then below the frame mount and top of the shock is a 1 5/8" spacer. I have never seen this before on three or four other S2’s. Any one else seen this and care to explain its purpose??
I thought it might be to offset ride height for a single drivers weight but never seen before.

I think that there is supposed to be a thick rubber buffer washer thingy, both below and above the top hole in the chassis.
The Workshop manual shows two black objects there.
Unique? The rubber spacer between the shock and chassis should be 1/2". Does the stud seem OEM or DPO?

Bill both shocks have the rubber bumper pads but that is not the issue. The question refers to the extra long stud bolt and the metal spacer, both seem very non standard.
Thanks for your reply.
These are probably not the original shock units.
Mine certainly are not, I think I have had various different brands fitted over the years.
I have a note that my first change was to KONI shock absorbers.
So in your case if the replacement unit was shorter than a standard unit, the space & long bolt were ordered/fitted ?
Presumably juggling with spacers would give the owner options on the height of the overall suspension, though you could not go too low or that long bolt would go through the fibreglass.

On further thoughts, are the shocks adjusted by screwing the outer shell down that bolt and your units are merely at their extreme end of the settings?
Hi again gang, Both shocks are off the car and both the same length. Both had the proper rubber pads. I bought this car from the original owner and he had never had the shocks changed yet He include a new set of Spax gas shocks to insall, which is the place this all started. The car has only 52k miles.
Looks like he had some work done at some point and the spacer must have been installed then. Just another PO question.
