What`s the current thinking on which brand dampers are the best for the front of a 1967 S3 Elan? For spirited road driving are TTR the best? Spax the worst? What else? where from?
Jim
Had a failed Spax years ago on the front of my +2. Now have TTR adjustables with variable damping. All nicely plated. So far so good. Ride height is a doddle to set.
The ride is lovely too.

Hi, rebuilt the front suspension on my 1967 Coupe a couple of years back and used Spax. Great so far. They have quite a bit of adjustment, I got the ones with adj spring seat so I could play with ride height, also went up on spring rate to tighten the car up a bit. They do get pretty stiff after about 7 clicks, good for track but too stiff for the street… if you can run to it go for a stiffer sway bar, the car really likes it…
Hi Jim
I have Koni Classics on my Plus 2 and they’re excellent, trouble is I don’t think they’re available any more.
I had Spax on my Europa Special for a while and didn’t like them at all. I ended up replacing them with a set of OE Armstrongs which were fine

I’ve used ProTech shocks on the front of my +2 and I am happy with them. Spyder recommended these to me.
I tend to like the front of my +2 with relatively soft setting on the front as it reduces the likelyhood of understeer when driving at the limit. I don’t know if that is relevant.
Good luck
Andy
Andy, did you get rears from Spyder as well? I got the Protech’s as well for the front, but the rears from Spyder don’t have a brand name on them. Was wondering if they are Protech as well?
Cheers!
I have the Pro-techs seem to be fine have a look towards the bottom below link

I have Tony Thompson on the back. I did consider Protech but at that time they didn’t have any and where asking for a pattern unit and they would make them. It left me with some doubts and a decided to use the TT ones as I had seen some good reports. I don’t know what Spyder were recommending for rear shocks at that time.

I finally went the route of the TTR fast road springs and dampers on the front and rear - as the project is still on going have no advice as yet on performance - hope I’ve made the right choice…
Stick to TTR all round.
Andy
Koni’s might not be available anymore but last time I talked to Koni they would
refurbish your old set.

Im pretty sure I have TTR already and will probably go with them again. TTR usually have a stand at the Stoneleigh Historic Motor Sports do in Feb. so I
ll get them then.
The Pro-Tech ones require shorter springs evidently.
