Fried internals of RVI tacho

Hi all,
This isn’t the bouncing Tach question! I am replacing the heater in the Plus2. Whilst the dash is out I had a look in the back of the tacho.
The sense wires are fried! The insulation is all melted, but the wire core is still intact.
My question is this: The sense wires through the tacho inductor coil are melted together. Does anyone has a picture of the internals that I could have a look at please? BTW the tacho IS still working!

Jeff 72 +2

Jeff,

the sense coil is the yellow cylinder at the top. The red, yellow, and white thing on the right is a modern replacement for capacitor C2.

Hope that helps,
Matthias

Thanks Mattias,
But you seem to have a different tach to me! My sense coil is much bigger!
Mine is from a 72 +2.
Thanks for the pic any how much appreciated.
Regards
Jeff

Jeff,

Mine did the same thing. Not sure why. If you take a knife to the melted insulation and cut it off, you will find that the wire core loops through the inductor coil a couple of times, that’s all. Nothing real high tech about it. Good luck.

Hi Frank,
Thanks for that, its what I thought and you have kindly confirmed it. Now, where did I put my scalpel?

Regards
Jeff

Mine did the same after I fitted an aldon ignitor ignition…
solved the problem by replacing the internals with an RVC type
Tim

Tim,
Is there a DIY conversion or did you get it done by a specialist?
Mike

DIY.
I looked for a smiths RVC gauge on EBAY with the same sweep and same rev range…
Then just swapped the internals…
Needed to drill some small holes in the face and case.

Tim
Could you not have pulled the needle and swapped the face?

John

Thanks Tim,
So that’s another job on the list!
Mike

Couldn’t replace just the dial on the new gauge as the case didn’t have the fittings for the ignition and main beam lamps…
The new case also wouldn’t accept the +2 bezel

The type of rev counter I canabalised is for sale on ebay at the mo…
