europa for sale

Just saw a lotus europa for sale on ebay…its the orange one from bucks county pa. …I took a good look at this car when I was at roadsters and ragtops restoration…I was there inquiring about possible work on my 72 elan sprint coupe…its a full resto, a beautiful job i must say but I heard the owner spent a bundle…maybe 40k?..anyhow…it just bogles the mind as to why someone would go to this extent and then sell it?..whoever buys it will get a heck of a deal…they do nice work at this place but its way beyond my price level…whats the most ever paid for a europa?..no specials…just a regular passenger car…or for that matter the same for an elan?
Im sure most of you have seen it listed but just wanted to get the word out

Ta I was looking on the UK website, lovely car I wonder how much to import to the UK?

That’s stunning!

They even painted the inside of the engine!

Doesn’t everyone use Glyptal these days? I love it, for gearboxes too.

It certainly is a beautiful car. I’d be afraid to drive it for fear of getting it dirty. Let alone in traffic risking damage! Not a very high reserve as it is already past it. Wonder what gives with the guy who bid it up and then retracted. See seller?s messages.

I haven’t seen the car personally, but every Europa lister who has regards it as an excellent example of the genuine article. AM Buria was a very active list member for awhile before he got busy and disappeared, so if you search the archives for his posts you can get a flavor for his position on originality (it’s actually surprising to me to see the list of improvements he made, though they are all quite sensible and reversible if you’re into that.)

He did drive the car, including a cross-country trip when he moved from California to Pennsylvania. (IIRC, he didn’t trust any shipper with his baby.)

There will be disputes about any Europa being worth this much coin, but if you want a near-perfect example and can handle Colorado Orange, I believe you can be comfortable bidding well into the twenties. I’d rank it the best Europa to come up on the block in the last few years. Other cars in its class (needs nothing) will be more heavily modified, as there are few listers who shared his level of passion for originality.

No interests, etc. I’d like to see him get a price worthy of his investment, and see the car go to someone who would appreciate it for what it is. If you’re the kind of person who would immediately start thinking about how to “improve” upon it, I think it’d break his heart. This car should be lovingly cared for, but driven. While it’s a show queen, it was clearly not built to be limited to that role.

I became very familiar with the car and with the seller this past week. Both top notch. I had a 71 S2 in Colorado Orange, so I was particularly attracted to it. All aspects of it were as reported, fully restored. I gave it my all in bidding for it, but at @$29K had to let go. It ended up selling for $32K plus. Woth it? Probably. Affordable for the average enthusiast? The whole car hobby is headed up. The “Barrett Jackson” syndrome I guess.

I think UK prices for the very best (like this one) have topped the current bid- appropriately bid number 47.
