engine rebuild

what would be the cost to rebuild the engine for 69 elan +2(parts &labour)

How much have you got ???

QED before they stopped rebuilding twincams told customers to expect a
?2800 bill but budget for ?3500.
If you want everything done e.g Water pump conversion, ARP bolts, Vernier pulleys, carbs rebuilt etc. It goes towards ?4500.

Thats before you then start thinking of silicon hoses, improving the cooling system, better air filters etc .

Its been a while since I’ve re-built a twin cam, but its not beyond the competent home machanic. For the prices quoted above, you could buy a very well tuned Zetec from a company like Dunnell in the UK.

My approach has always been to do the assembly work myself. I use my local (very good) machine shop to inspect the bits and do any machining work necessary. Re-assembly is quite straight forwards for a twin cam, but always use Wellseal for gasket joints. It has always given me leak free engines!

Your final bill will come in much cheaper and you’ll have gained a lot of experience along the way.

thanks everyone, I think I will be riding my bicycle this summer!!!

The final bill will depend on the state of the engine when stripped.
You might find that a few Dollars worth of bits is all it needs to keep it running for a bit longer.

Clive

did the bottom end last winter for <?1000 including cost of a second hand 711m block…
Included new pistons, vernier timing sprockets etc…

It all depends upon the state of the engine, The most basic level you are likely to be able to get away with is new crank bearings, piston rings the bores honed new valve guides , timing chain and a water pump re-build doing all the work yourself this could come in at less than ?500, on the other hand if the head is corroded, the block / crank already machined to max allowable or worse a piston has met a valve it may be cheaper to just buy a good secondhand engine which seem to go for between ?1000 and ?1500.

I have between 1500 and 2000 cdn dollars [about 1000 pounds Stirling] in my motor —that’s gaskets -bearings -water pump kit --rings --timing chain —3 new in take valves ----parts only ----valve grind --disassembly and reassembly are my time only —I reused --pistons -crank [after crack test and polish ]-rods were good --block was good --so I think its to your advantage to buy the manual and learn how to assemble these motors —they are not a complex piece -take things like the water pump out to be done if you don’t have access to a 1 ton press --take the block to a machine shop for them to check over —piston ring gap is simple -just a feeler gauge and some time - take the head out to be done thus saving the disassembly cost at a garage —the only trick is to get the timing marks perfect -and I posted that ’ in tearing my hair out’ on this site —if you are timid go to the wreckers [knackers] and buy a junk Kent or 1600 ford engine to start and practice on —the savings will make you a happy man —and you can wear a kilt with a sense of belonging – and I will buy all the webber head twincams I can find 1000 POUNDS OR 2000 CDN ---- ed
