When I posted my last reply saying the problem was sorted and the clatter was gone I had yet to replace the sump, so that I could make sure everything was ok as I turned the crank.
I refitted the sump, added some oil and lowered the car level, rotated the crank and the clatter is back.
So what on earth is going on?
Once again please help Thanks John
1300 sump??? …Big end cap catching…which side is the oil drain plug on? Right side on a 1500 and Left side on a 1300 as I recall.
Thanks for the reply, the plug is on the RH side, looks like the sump will have to come off again but why would it now be catchng?

For clarity the engine is in the car and you only removed the sump ?
Turning the engine in this condition there was no noise.?
This points to the sump as stated by 26/36.
You can now look for marks left by contact or even mark up moving items with tip-ex and try fitting sump temporarily and investigate from there. Is the drain plug on the right looking from the front?
Was the noise continuesly for full rotation or short periods. Or even blocked at some point.
Images help with problems like this

Yes John, engines is in the car. if you stand facing the front the sump plug is on the left. The noise is continous for full rotation.

Is the oil slinger correctly fitted? Here are a couple of topics with photos.

Also the dipstick and tube were previously mentioned, have you checked both?
The sump is off again,… you can now rotate the crank continously without any noise, the oil slinger is correctly fitted and the crank bolt torqued up
There is no sign of any damage to the sump
John
I don’t know if its possible but could a big end catch on oil pick up/pipe or oil return pipe?
When the sump is on could it be moving the pick up to a point where it touches a big end?
Is the oil baffle plate secure and not catching the crank? I’ve had those baffle plates come lose before.
Once I had cleaned the oil from inside the sump I noticed the baffle plate although firmly welded had a shiney edge to it with a very small sharpish piece on top, I will file it smooth and see if there is any difference.
John
If anybody is still interested i filed the baffle, refitted the sump, rotated the crank by hand and the noise has gone
John
That baffle is not original… What was it hitting? The Crankshaft?
Oh Wait, that was Brian’s picture…
Can you post a picture of your sump?

The baffle in my picture is original and correct for a 6 bolt crank, the 4 bolt crank has a different baffle.

Oh, didn’t realize that… Is that something Lotus added to the Standard Ford Sump?
p.s. Good to see you back Brian…
Don’t think it’s a Lotus modification, I think Ford added it as used on the MK2 Cortina as I recall.
Where was the damage to the baffle, right at the front beneath the timing chain?
My baffle is the same as Brian’s, it had a shiney edge approx. in the middle with a small sharp bit sticking up, I nearly nicked my finger on it so filed it smooth,
I can only assume the big end was touching it, but how did it get like that?
John
Thin pan gasket?
Something strange is going on here. The clearance of the centre baffle to the crank is substantial. The top is slightly below the raised rear section of the sump where it joins it so no way a small sharp bit on the baffle should hit the crank rods. Something appears to be non standard.
here is a photo of the standard 6 bolt sump and centre baffle
cheers
