Engine bay wiring

Hi all.

I’m trying to progress the wiring of my car, but am a bit stuck. I have a new front wiring loom which I didn’t actually buy - it came with the car - that doesn’t make much sense to me. I am trying, at the moment, to get the ignition wired through to the ignition key so that I can sit inside the car and start it etc.

On the solenoid, I have a wire that buzzes through to the correct position on the ignition switch, so that goes on the middle spade on the solenoid which faces the centre of the car. Then I have two brown wires, one with a spade connector and one with a ring connector, which go onto the outer terminal along with the wire from the battery. Then there’s the cable that goes to the starter motor. So far that all makes sense.

I also have a black wire coming out with the ones that I’ve just mentioned, with a spade connector on it. I’ve buzzed it through and it connects to the ground on the windscreen wiper motor and to the ground on the brake fluid level. But nowhere else. This doesn’t make sense. It should, I believe, connect through to the suspension tower chassis bolt on the near side. But it’s not connected. Neither is there a connection through to the dash. I’ve checked with my original loom, and the earth point on the body of the windscreen wiper motor is connected through to the chassis bolt on the near side suspension tower. So I think there’s a mistake / broken connection in the new loom. I may have done my usual trick of mislaying part of the loom - it’s been in my loft for 7 years so it’s entirely possible.

So, I think I need to understand how the loom is normally connected through. I can take the tape off and put an additional wire in but would appreciate knowing how other people’s cars are wired. The circuit diagram in the manual doesn’t show and earth point on the solenoid, which is barking as it doesn’t work without the bracket earthed.

Thanks in advance.

Sean.

The earth on the control box has two wires, one is the earth for the solenoid.

Just realised you have a +2 so it?s probably different.

Need to know which loom you have… +2, +2S or +2S130.

Jeremy

Sorry chaps - I have a +2S 130/5 manufactured in Oct '72. I have the alternator system which has a built in voltage reg.

Since posting I’ve fitted the solenoid and replaced the spade connector on the black wire with a ring that’s now clamped by one of the bolts holding the solenoid to the bodywork. I also have the coil mounted on the bodywork next to the radiator, and have the Aldon ignitor wired up. Next I need to connect the Brise starter motor solenoid to something, so I’m going to experiment with just connecting it to the switched 12v from the car solenoid; from previous posts I see that this may lead to slow switch off, but if the car solenoid is earthed properly I can’t see why this would happen. I can’t actually experiment until my gear lever comes back from Allan Voigt however, as I think I left it in gear when I took the lever out - oops. Not one I want to get wrong.

In the meantime, looking at what’s there, I’m wondering where the wire to the rev counter is, and realising that actually the wiring loom is probably not the right one. There aren’t that many wires though, so I could just add additional wires in to make the car work for now.

If anyone has the time to supply more info that would be appreciated. The way this restoration has been going I’ll probably end up making my own loom up.

All the best.

Sean.
