Elan block question

Folks,

Was looking at the Elan block last nite, and noticed a small threaded hole imediately below the frost plug in the back of the block (behind the flywheel). Now I know 711 blocks don’t have this hole (I’m guessing its about 0.25" diameter), but this is the original L block. What the h*&& is it for? It is a blind hole, ie doesn’t go through the water jacket.

Bill,
I dont recall any holes below the plug, there is one to the left of it which is the main oil gallery and this is blanked off with a screw. I know as I once left the blanking plug out and wondered why I couldn’t get oil pressure
…all the oil was on the floor
The pic below shows the blanked of drilling on a 711 1300 engine and the three (well 4 actually) tapped holes above the crank are for the rear plate/oil seal housing,

Thanks Brian.

I was sure I hadn’t seen this tapped hole on other blocks - I just wanted to make sure that older age wasn’t playing tricks on me.

Your pic puts my mind at ease…

Cheers,
Bill
