The RHS door lock mechanism in my baby Elan S2 in knackered. To fix it, all I actually need is the pice that holds the tumbler and attaches it to the rest of the mechanism.
I thought I would just buy a whole new assembly if one ever came on Ebay. Well, one did and sold for $480 ealier today, so now it’s PLan B.
Can someone tell me what car these mechanisms came out of? Can’t find that info in the usual spots.
I have a matching pair with locks if youre interested (well complete handles and lock with keys)…more importantly if I can find them in the garage!!!
cheers

I am in the same boat (except LHS in my case). A left-side lock sold on ebay a month or so ago for more than I was willing to pay. Note that the current ebay item is missing the barrels.
In my case, and I suspect in Darren’s case, the missing part is the barrel, which consists of a cylindrical sleeve within which the lock itself resides. There is a little stud which locates the sleeve within the lock mechanism. When the stud and/or the slot it engages wear, the barrel can make a sudden departure.
Brian Buckland’s book says that the locks come from (relying on memory here) an Austin 60 and can only be found at the junkyard, at parts swaps, or for very high prices on ebay.
I’m attaching the piece I need. Now that I have an idea of what other cars may have the similar piece, I can broaden my search. Hopefully to some cheaper places.
I appreciate those who have offered to help me out. However, I would hate to destroy a complete mechanism for the one part I need and deprive you from selling the whole unit. Judging from Ebay, they are quite valuable!
I double-checked Buckland this evening. The source, according to the book, is the Austin A60. Given the number of barrel-less locks that I’ve seen on ebay, this must be a common problem. Either those barrels have been lost or they’ve been scavenged to replace other lost barrels. I am only missing the cylindrical part, not the carrier as Darren is.
My hope is that the barrel (or perhaps the barrel and carrier) can be found on other cars of the era and transplanted to my mechanism. No luck yet, though.

I was thinking that some of the locks come from and mg 1100 and if I remember correctly it is somehow modified easily to the elan configuration quote]
I have a full set of 1100/1300 locks here for used on another car and they do not look like the one illustrated above.
What I would suggest though is to look at some boot locks from that period as the barrel assembly looks very similar.
I’ll have a search round and see what I can find

Show me a picture of the actual knackered piece - I feel sure from your description that it is the locking device that the key fits into.
Not 100% sure on this one(if they’ll fit that is) but- a firm called HYKEE sell replacement lock barrels that work on a radial pin tumbler system (ie they’re unpickable)- they are designed to replace original manufacturer barrels such as those using FS key types etc.
Much superior in construction to the originals, they’re brass internals. I replaced the barrels on a Reliant Scimitar some years back- cost me around ?30 if I recall correctly. On a similar note ERA make similar barrels for the S4/Sprint models ie those with the barrel separate from the handle- cost about ?60 the pair.
I’ve still got the contact details somewhere if anybody is interested.
If memory serves (which it seldom does these days) the early S1/S2 locks are different from some of the later cars, I seem to remember that the later ones were 1100/1300, as already mentioned, Robinshaw/Ross say that S3 onwards handles are from the Maxi/1800 and I think they might also have been on the Triumph 2000.
btw, Brian Bucklands excellent book does not show how all the twiddly links in an S4 door lock fit together, it’s missing from the Lotus and Brooklands manuals too. There is a very good reason for this- it’s impossible to see, so you can’t accurately draw it! This job is a complete bastard to do, if you have to take one to pieces take VERY good notice of where the bits come from.
That is not quite correct, the S2 outside handle is bolted to the door and is a compleatly seperate unit from the the lock/barrel/mechanism/inside lever which is an all in one unit with the push button with key slot protruding through the outside handle.
It is nothing like the S3 or S4 handles.
Here are pictures of S2 door handles from the outside. The left-side barrel is missing - in the closeup, you can see the slot that retains the barrel in the sleeve, and the hole at the back of the sleeve that the actuating rod at the back of the barrel goes through (I think). What I am calling the “sleeve” is the same as the bit that was outlined in the photo a few posts back.
Andrew,
The barrel that is missing is not part of the outside handle (shown in your pic) it is part of the compleat inside mechanism. Well it is with my S2 and my chassis number is reasonably close to yours 26/3944
Exactly. The exterior handle fits over the sleeve (best seen in the close-up) and the barrel protrudes through the handle, but the sleeve and the barrel (with lock tumblers inside) are part of the inside mechanism. RD Enterprises website has a nice picture of a reproduction door handle - if only he carried the lock mechanisms as well!
