Door cards

Has anyone made up new door cards or bought new ones. I’ve not managed to trace any earlier threads but I can’t imagine it’s not a common problem.

I’ve stripped mine down and the driver’s door trim can probably be rescued with a new piece of hardboard but the passenger side is not in good condition, especially the carpet on the lower part. I could start sewing but…

The easiest solution would be replacement trim (if the price is reasonable) but if anyone can convince me it’s a DIY possibility, I’ll have a go.

I have recovered mine with new carpet, the only really difficult but is sewing the piping round the bottom…but can be done…I seem to remember a slight problem trying to fix the toprail to the card…re. type of fixings to use…

John,
Many thanks for the post, I’ve bought the hardboard!

Did you sew the carpet to the plastic trim of the top half or just glue it and did you sew it all by hand or machine?

Can you recommend a carpet supplier, I like the tufted texture of the original carpet.

As to the top fixings, they’re not reusable of course so I’m going to do a search on split rivets. I’ll post if I find anything suitable.

Mike,it’s been a while since I did mine but recently have been thinking of replacing it with thin sheet ali, should be as easy to work, maybe easier, because I’m not too happy with the edges where the fixings are-they tend to come away from the door?

It was all hand sewn-took a while, and improved my sewing skills as time passed,If I remember correctly I fixed the top rail with some old fashioned paper clip “thingies” that have two legs and spread out…

A trawl around the cheaper carpet shops came up with a roll end of lightweight black tufted-have even replaced the carpet with the stuff…

Good luck

John

The ‘clips’ on the top are split (or bifurcated) rivets and I think I’ve found a source on the Internet, the sell them in boxes of 100 so I’m going to try to trace a local supplier.

Interested that you’re looking at an alternative to hardboard. There’s an old thread here where someone made a fibreglass board and secured it with Velcro. I’ve got the hardboard but I’d like to find a way of waterproofing it because it’s usually fine as lng as it’s kept dry.

I also did mine some yeaers ago, I used 4mm marine ply and sewed the new carpet and binding by hand, I did the sewing a foot or two each evening while watching the telly(also did all the floor mats as well). If I remember corrrectly I used Pop rivets and washers for the top and then peened them flat.
