Degreasing prior to bodywork

Does anyone have any advice on degreasing the underside of the body and engine compartment? I don’t really want to use any water as I am trying as much as possible to dry the GRP out prior to starting the bodywork.

There are some pictures of Elan bodies being prepared with pristine undersides and engine bays - nothing but clean, bare GRP. Mine has a thick layer of oily gunge stuck to it and patches of grubby underseal.

I have been scared off from blasting the surface of the body panels, but perhaps I could consider having the underside soda blasted?

Any advice would be most welcome.

Andy.

I used brake clean on my Plus2, and it worked fine. Removed all gunk, grease/oil. and under coating. Now just plain fibre glass.

I used white spirit and a roll of paper towels. Cheap and worked a treat.

You could use panel-wipe. It’s a very volatile solvent, cheap too, and leaves no residue. I use it for all sorts of things, as well as resprays!
