Has anyone thought what drivers of cars with retractable headlights will do when the Health and Safety fascists pass the new law insisting that all cars run on dipped headlights during the daytime. Sure as God made little green apples I’m not driving around with my headlights up - spoils the lines, for a start.
Only solution seems to be to fit a small driving lamp either side of the grill on a baby Elan. Any opinions?
Yes ignore it, & just say the vacuum line’s got a leak on it & you’re awaiting a repair.
Just switch 'em on and drive without raising them - should make for an interesting test case!
Just attach 2 white lights to the front of the car and hook them up to the ignition ‘on’ switch ----These will be the least of your worries-- over here the speed Nazis are putting 55 mph governors on all transport trucks and are now making noises about demanding them on all cars – -[Adolph will be so proud ]–soon we will all have 5 hp Briggs and Stratton lawnmower motors mandated on all our cars ----but parts will be available readily -ed
Thanks, guys, food for thought! Just remember-
Nil illigitimi carborundum!
Arn’t you a day early for this post?
were not on Biggin On the Bump time — -and I wish it were an April fools joke ----but there really pushing it here -ed
Convert your car to 26R headlamps.
Damn, they are not road legal in the UK either.
Cheers,
Pete.
seems most of the new cars in Ontario where we’ve had daytime running lights for years now have gone to high intensity amber that double as turn signals and leave the white lights off.
could pobably get away with replacing the turn signals on the Elan with this type of filiment if push comes to shove.
You can fit auxiliary lamps for daylight running.
On the plus side they may have an exemption for classic cars
Steve, that would take a modicum of…common sense…from the powers that be.
So don’t hold your breath.
Yo Richard!! Politicians and common sense
Not in this life time
P.S. just to satisfy my curiousity, why are 26R headlamps not road legal in the UK???
P.P.S. This would have been a great April fools prank

Leo,
The 26R light height arrangement would probably bring the headlight below the minimum 500mm UK lighting regulation. However, my Elan passed MOTs without question until 1989. It has not been on the road since so I do not know the current situation.
I hope that when I do finally get it back on the road I won’t have problems MOTing it as I don’t want to have to change to ‘pop-up’ lights or jack the suspension up in order to get it passed.

The reason that the (expensive) pop-up lights came about in the first place was that the fixed option would have been too low for the Construction and Use regulations; I have a feeling that they had only recently been changed when the Elan was conceived.
In my experience, when it comes to old cars, most MoT testers don’t know the difference between their arse and a hole in the ground, so it would be a very awkward tester who gave a fail on this obscure technical point.
Cheers,
Pete.
SORRY GUYS --just a a bit of fun for April 1st ----ed
