Coolexperts issue?

I kept in touch via email with Steve at Coolexperts UK while they were working on their thermostat housing/filler neck (similar to the earlier one from Clivey boy) and then had it in production. Finally about six weeks ago I asked for his suggestions for ordering one (and HP rad cap) for delivery to the States, and per his reply, I posted payment via PayPal with details and shipping address.

Having not heard or seen anything back after a couple weeks, I emailed again. Then again and again. Eventually he emailed back apologizing for the delay and asking me to confirm the shipping address, which I did. Weeks since then; I’ve emailed several more times and PM’d him here, and zilch.

Anyone with insight - or similar experience?

Thanks!

I tried several times last fall to place an order online for the thermo housing, but was unable to do so due to issues with the checkout process. Tried many times to communicate with them about the website issues and to inquire about just ordering it via email but never received a reply. Fortunately I had not sent any payment yet. Not sure what their issues are, but clearly they have some.

I ordered the termo housing a few months ago. Website blew up when I tried to use paypal, but worked OK when I tried again with a card. Housing arrived a few days later.

Surface finish was a bit rough, I gave it a light skim on the mill to clean up the gasket surface, probably an unnecessary step. The hole for the pipe to the recuperation bottle was drilled off centre, but I had planned to replace with a brass fitting anyway, so no issue for me there.

Hi All ,

I was at Coolex last week … & unfortunately Steve ( Mr Cool ) wasn`t there , as he is having to help a poorly family member at the moment …

Please bear with them … Alistair was very helpful in Steve`s absence …

Paul .

I ordered a new rad including temp sensor & fan from them by phone in Dec. Received it in about a week, exactly what I ordered.

I ordered the thermostat housing with filler recently and there was a discrepancy in the billing, but when I inquired it was made right immediately.

Update: I telephoned Coolex on Feb. 17 and spoke with Alastair. He was most helpful. He checked back and saw they’d finally sent an email noting that they needed a Street Address (I had given a PO Box but had noted several times that a street address was available if it would be better). But oops - they had emailed it to themselves rather than to me.
Anyway, I gave Alastair the street address verbally and via email. And lo and behold, the order (thermostat housing/filler neck and an HP rad cap) arrived today Feb. 19. Well done chaps.

A question for those who have one of the coolex filler necks.

I recently bought one and noticed a couple of things when starting to fit it and comparing it to the original.

The first was that the three sealing faces are not machined which is not ideal given that the casting is quite rough. There are threads on here on people’s fixes, usually sanding the faces.

The second and potentially more concerning is that the angle of the hose spout isn’t particularly close to the original - perhaps 15 degrees off in both the horizontal and vertical.

This shows the new Vs old as best as I can get the bolt holes aligned:

Has anyone had issues getting the (one piece, later car) top hose to fit, maybe kinking it, touching the cam cover, or leaking?

Thanks.

I struggled with this too, but not with hose fitting, that was OK with mine. I had a lot of trouble trying to get reliable cooling system temperatures, tried a Fat Boy rad and the thermostat housing from Coolex and it didn’t work for me. I also found that I had a lot of trouble getting a rad cap to fit the housing correctly: the depth from the top edge to the sealing face seemed odd (I now have more rad caps than your local motor factors…lol), and couldn’t make the recuperation system work which I became convinced was down to the roughness of the casting not making a proper seal and allowing air in when the system should have been drawing coolant back from the bottle. In the end I bought the TTR alloy rad and header tank, went back to the standard thermostat housing and it solved all my issues. The car now runs at a steady 80* (actually just under) and if I flick the fan on when in traffic it will stay there even in traffic queues at relatively high ambient temps.
I think the Coolex housing is a great idea, but just not particularly dimensionally accurate or very well machined in my opinion. This is just my experience, other people have obviously used them with great success.

Thanks Phil, I’m coming to the same conclusion I think.

As you say, some people seem to have got them to work but I don’t really want to have to faff around with it when I’m setting the engine up after the rebuild.

Have you seen?

Thanks for the link. Sadly it’s one of the “correct” ones.

As was mine…
