Broken Rear Strut

Having noticed a strange noise I jacked the rear right of my S3 and found the rear strut as per the pictures attached. It looks like a threaded cap on top of it broke (The thread is almost gone).
Any advice on how to repair this?
Olivier.

They are usually tightened up & then centre punched a couple of times to stop them coming loose. Unfortunately, when the dampers are replaced, this makes it difficult to remove the cap without damaging it’s thread or the thread in the strut housing. If the thread in the strut housing is OK it would probably be best to dismantle it and fit a new cap.
If the thread in both parts is dodgy, if it was mine I would try screwing the cap back in and then carefully drill & tap through the strut housing into the cap in several places and see how long it lasts… Never done it though so this is just an idea…
Anyone got any better suggestions?

Another possible bodge … if the thread in the strut is OK you could cut the bottom off the nut so that it screws in deeper to the unused portion of the thread (where the paint is visible). I would probably add some Locktite too.

It might work

You can get new parts to replace the wrecked thread. I know TTR carries these parts, other suppliers may also stock these.
