Bonnet FG Advice Needed

I’m a novice at FG repair and am getting ready to start repairing body panels starting with the hood/bonnet.

My bonnet is the flat S3 type with the supposed metal hoop (is there really a metal hoop brace in there?). My questions are:

  1. Should the S3 hood be reinforced similar to the X bracing on the S1/S2 hoods? If this is done will there be enough clearance between the bracing and the engine/Webers?

  2. My FG vertical supports for the slide hinge have become delaminated with what appears to be cardboard in the middle. Can I apply resin between the two halves and clamp, or do I need to cut out the old FG and start fresh?

  3. The front “chin” which sits below the front nose has sections missing. Any suggestions on how to avoid the mysterious “hood” fly-off?

All advice is appreciated. Thank you

In my “garage-club” is an S3 which has those original side cardboards, they are just an auxillary “mould” for fitting the FG reinforcements. Just some layers of FG and resin of course. The “mould” would not come out afterwards… :unamused:
The car has the cross brace and lives well with webers.
It also has the front nose central spring - which might be the cause of the FG missing there.
S1 S2’s would have two bobbins laminated to the side of the sliding curves which would hold two sideward springs.

… Hi John,
“OEW” is an S3 and still have her original bonnet .
It does have the X reinforcement , no problems with Weber’s that she have since 66’ …
The metal brace is for a big central spring attached to the steering rack .
This will avoid the famous “mysterious fly-off” if only fitted with good windscreen side lockers . Despite the X , with speed , the bonnet tend to bend and if not correctly ajusted , it will take off , with sometime funny consequencies …

The last thing I would mention is that you can end up chaseing your tail once you start fixing/modifying panels like the hood - if you not careful your fixes can distort the panel
