Does anyone have the magic formula for refinishing the extractor grills used on the Elan S4 and also intake grills for Plus 2.
Presumably these are made of cast light alloy: were they originally anodised or coated at all? Should the face surface be bare alloy or coated with a clear lacquer.
(Note not sure if the chrome plated one on Mr Orange are the way to go)
polished alloy without laquer on the ones I’ve owned and seen. I refurbed some by using paint sripper to remove the paint, small brass wire brushes (dremel) to remove the corrosion between the fins, the faces i sanded back smooth with a block and 800 grit wet and dry. then mask up the faces with masking tape, cut out the slots with a scalpel and etch prime using UPOL ACID8 (Halfords sell it) then satin matt black.
remove the tape and polish the bare alloy fins with a small mop (dremel again) and solvol autosol!
thanks for for the cookbook. Will get the dremel out and start the cleanup. Presuambly the etch primer needs to be brushed not sprayed because the fins are quite close together?
If you cover the fins with masking tape, you can then cut out the slots with a sharp stanley knife blade or scalpel, the primer and black can then be sprayed.the tape can be peeled of after.
