5 speed

well the tranny on the super 7 is about toast after a hundred and ninety thousand miles -a rebuilt is 1500 US and the parts are 800 d-so any of you z tech hot rodders have a suggestion for a 5 speed ford tranny that bolts right on a 4 bolt crank twin cam bell housing and block and puts the shifter in the correct position???ed

Ed,

there’s been a fair amount of dialogue about 5 & 6 speed g/boxes recently.
There are two main problems that you will have:
1.
Sourcing a suitable box in your part of the World.
There’s the Voigt conversion or the European Ford MT75.
Both will bolt straight on to the Twinc & Spyder bits can put the MT75 gear lever in the right position.
(Clutch operation will also need to be sorted out)

In the 7 the amount of available space is the biggest problem.
I know that the MT75 box is a bit fatter than the Elan box.
That may cause it to intrude into the footwell space which is already very limited in a 7

I suspect that a rebuild of yor present box will be the best alternative (& don’t hammer it so hard in future  )

Cheers
John

“About Toast” implies it is still running. If the gears themselves are Ok then gaskets bearings and synchro rings for a complete rebuild should be signficantly less than US$800. The box is simple and you should be able to do the rebuild yourself if you have suitable bearing pullers. No other special tools needed apart from a dummy layshaft and 2 pieces of string.

it really only gets exepnsive if you need new gears. Not sure what gear set your Seven has in it but you can always source a Quaiffe set if you cant get an acceptable second hand gear set or box as a source of spares. Elan 4 speeds come up frequently as lots of people put 5 speeds in
