20 TONNE HYDRAULIC PRESS

I have just been told that when I leave this hallowed earth, I am not going to be able to take whats left of my hard earned money, Liebor budget on Wednesday, with me, much to my chagrin. I have therefore decided to have a good spend up, and have treated myself to what appears to be a decent press. The 20 year old in the salesforce could do with some more training, but I soon put him right. Other than that, quite pleased so far. Comes with a 10 year warranty, in writing, and is entirely made in England. I did not want, and would not have bought shite made in china. I have been researching this purchase for over 2 years, and glad I did.

Hi

We have something similar. I can’t remember where it came from but I am pretty sure it was China. Sometimes you just have to have a press. A very useful tool.

All the best

Leslie,
I would be very surprised if it is ‘entirely made in England’ The definition of ‘made in XXXX’ is very woolly. From memory, the definition of country of origin is ‘last country in which significant value was added’ or alternatively the country in which a ‘substantial transformation’ occurred.

It may be that the components were assembled in the UK, or that final boxing and labelling was done in the UK with a commensurate step up in value. Without knowing the details of the product, it is hard to be specific.

The reason I mention this is that I have a Sealey 20 Ton press that looks very similar to yours (albeit red), that I am pretty sure wasn’t made in the UK.

Anyway, good luck with the press.

I am well aware of the bullshit around the term ‘Made in UK’ Andrew and that is why I carried out my due diligence.

I have it in writing that that is indeed the case, and they say that if the product was not made by themselves, they would not be offering a 10 year warranty.

You hear a lot of crap around the phrase ‘we don’t make anything in this country any more’. Nothing could be further from the truth. Do your research good people. The next big purchase on my list is a hydraulic log splitter. I shall not be buying chinese dross.

Leslie

SGS don’t manufacturer anything themselves. I too suspect the press you have bought is chinese made.
Most of the so called garage equipment they sell is chinese manufactured and reboxed here in the UK . Labelling EU or UK CV approved doesn’t mean anything.
I wouldn’t worry about it though. If it works well and does the job it doesn’t matter where it is made!

Alan.

As I said, I have it in writing that SGS made it themselves, here in the UK, and I am entirely happy with that, and that the press is guaranteed for 10 years.

No idea where the items I’ve had from SGS were made but all of them, engine crane, engine stand, trolley jack, transmission jack have all lasted well and done a good job. I think that will do you proud and looks like a good bit of kit

I guess in the end the important thing is whether something works and lasts the test of time rather than where it comes from. My first trolley jack was bought 30 years ago. Chinese made, never topped it up and still going strong. Have bottle Jacks that are similar from both UK and elsewhere and work fine despite some abuse from me.

I was very surprised, and a little concerned, to read that SGS would supply a written assurance that the press in question was manufactured in the U.K. when I was absolutely convinced otherwise.

I consider SGS a trustworthy and reputable company who supply very good quality equipment, but there seems to have been a failure of communication at some point.

Hopefully the following response received this morning will clear up any misunderstanding…

Cheers

Made in the UK. From local and imported ingredients.

Hi,
I like new “toys”, so well done withe the buy. I bought an SGS engine crane and it has been excellent. Folds up well and has a long reach and is sturdy which gives confidence. Much cheaper than hiring one, two engine pulls and it paid for itself.

cheers
Mark

Like it says in the letter SGS manufacture ‘elsewhere’. The ‘elsewhere’ being ‘their’ factory in China. (P.R.C. ‘People’s Republic of China’)
As I said before SGS do not manufacturer anything themselves.
I live quite close to their sales unit here in Derby.
I also have direct contact details for the MD of SGS should anyone require it.

Alan.

Bear in mind that Chinese manufacturers can make anything to whatever standard you require.
It’s just that some re-sellers have low standards.

If you really want to have a re-think about the ethics of various companies just research what is required for “Swiss Made” to be put onto a watch…
